Heather Durant (nee Walton) began as an Assistant Librarian at the SMB Campus in 1951. In December 1961 she resigned from the position due to her approaching marriage. No replacement was found so she returned in a "part-time position". She progressed to head librarian. Heather resigned again in 1962 and took a break for eight years. She then returned to the school. Combining the two periods of work she was employed for almost 50 years. During her time with the University of Ballarat she made an important contribution to the operation of the SMB Library. At times she was put in charge and worked to maintain library standards and collections through her work in library acquisitions and cataloguing. Arthur D. Senior was born on 13 November 1905 at Colac, Lancashire, England. He came to Ballarat in 1927 and was a student, and later a part time evening instructor in Electrical Mechanics, at the Ballarat School of Mines. This hall was originally at Tostaree where it was opened in 1919 as State School no. 3994, worked part time with Upper Hospital Creek, Canni Creek. Located near the NSW border in the far east of Victoria, the Bendoc school served the needs of a rural population which opened the land to grazing at the turn of the century. It opened on September 8 1896. In December 1956 falling attendances forced the Education Department to close it. It is interesting to note that children here sought their secondary education in NSW. The first head teacher) was John M. Cass and the last R R King. In 1953-54 Lower Bendoc operated part-time with Goongerah. In 1955 it regained full-time status, but in 1956 worked part-time with Tubbut. Author, Dorothy Hepburn, attended Bendoc State School.This is a useful reference tool on the history of Bendoc.A spiral bound book with a plastic sheet front. George James McFarlane was born on 19 August 1895 in Wodonga, Victoria. He was the youngest son of Charles John McFarlane and Emily Charlotte nee Ellis. He married Margaret Frances Kirley in Wodonga in 1918 and they had 6 children. George kept this diary for most of 1927. It documents his daily life and some local events. George worked part time with the local blacksmith and then on his own farm before and after work. He was later to take over the blacksmith himself, operating as a blacksmith and farrier from premises in High Street, Wodonga. George's diary documents his daily dedication to other jobs on the farm including trapping and shooting vermin such as rabbits and foxes, growing watermelon and vegetables and training horses. He also became a member of the Albury Coursing Club. In his later years, George moved to Euroa and then fo the Northcote and Broadmeadows area of Melbourne where he died in 1968.A small diary with cardboard cover including volume and publisher details within a border. A red and white retailer sticker has been adhered to the front cover. The diary includes a calendar for 1927 and 37 pages of information including postal, money order and telegraphic information, British weights and measures and Directions for Making a will. The remainder of the diary is divided into 3 days per page. As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. Born on the 5th of August,1926, Margaret Gwen Hardy was the very first Commissioner of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) and was appointed in 1975, a major victory for women at the time. This was the first time in the 84 year history of the organisation. Hardy had also been a Lilydale Councillor and went on to become the first female Shire President. Along with her work commitments as part of the Board, Hardy was the wife of Dr. Bill and had three children, two sons and a daughter. Next door to her home in Mt Evelyn was her husband’s surgery, where Hardy also worked part-time as a Manager. Hardy was also involved with the Lilydale High School Mother’s Club, she was the President of the Mt. Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association, on the Advisory Council of Monbulk High School and was the Secretary of the Lilydale Citizens Advisory Service at the time. Fletcher Jones Clothing Factory was a key industry in Warrnambool from 1948 to its closure in 2005. The business was founded by David Fletcher Jones (1897-1977), a clothing manufacturer and retailer who worked as a hawker in the Western District following service with the A.I.F. in World War One. In 1924 Fletcher Jones opened three shops in Liebig Street selling men’s wear, hosiery and linen and operating a small tailoring business. He moved his shop to another location in Liebig Street and began to concentrate on men’s trousers production. In 1946 he opened a shop in Collins Street in Melbourne and eventually had stores and factories all over Australia. In Warrnambool he opened his factory at Pleasant Hill in Flaxman Street in 1948 and became a major Warrnambool employer, with over 1000 employees at one time. He transformed his business into a co-operative, with the name, ‘Fletcher Jones and Staff’ registered in 1947. The business diversified into other ranges of clothing for men and women but failed to compete with cheaper overseas clothing imports and the factory and shops were closed in the early 21st century. 001143.1 Project Book. It explores the philosophy behind the business and milestones achieved and the factory gardens. It tells of renovations and happenings in regard to the various shops around the country as well as trading figures. It tells of the royal visit of 1954 and other social events and items of interest around the various shops. 001143.3 Flyer :The text on this flyer also tells the story of the development of the Fletcher Jones brand to the point where there in the year2000 retail expansion was still happening but the Warrnambool workforce had shrunk from over 1000 at the peak to approximately 200. The company had commenced importing a range of clothing by this time These three items present different views of a company which was an important part of industry in Warrnambool for over 60 years in the latter part of the 20th century. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to contracts between Marion Gauley ,contractor of Warrnambool and the borough of Warrnambool for the operation of horse work with the tramway. John McDermid sadler,and William Stevens farmer of Russell's Creek are acting as surety for the contract.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people. These two important books are part of a series produced in the 1880s but they have widely-different content. One describes the natural history of the Parish of Selborne in the County of Hampshire in England. It was written by the British naturalist and ornithologist, Gilbert White and first published in 1789. Since that time it has been republished over 300 times right up to the present day. It is notable for its charm and simplicity and for its description of a pre-industrial England. The other is by the American author, Walt Whitman, first published in 1871. It is a major work of comparative politics and expounds on the influence of the Louisiana Purchase and the expansion of the American spirit and character. It also denounces the post-Civil War materialism that had spread at that time in America. These books are of interest because of their antiquarian nature but they are mostly of local Warrnambool interest because of their inscriptions. The books belonged to William Hugh McMahon (1862-1936). William McMahon commenced a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1894, firstly in Liebig Street and later in Kepler Street. He was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool for 30 years and a staunch adherent of the Presbyterian Church. He and his family lived at ‘Glenrye’ at the corner of Ardlie Street and Botanic Road, a site where the St. John of God Hospital was later established. These two accompanying volumes are in the Camelot Series (1887 and 1888). They are hard cover books with red covers and two ornamental patterns on the front cover (stylized urn and fan shapes). The urn pattern is repeated on the spines. ‘The Natural History of Selborne’ has 366 pages (a Preface and Chapters on the Natural History of Selborne, a Naturalist’s Calendar and Observations on Various Branches of Natural History) and ‘Democratic Vistas’ has 175 pages (a Preface and 12 Chapters). The latter has the remains of a label stuck to the front cover. Ernest Ladner worked as manager for Saltau & Sons who were produce merchants of Kepler St Warrnambool. he was a keen golfer and fisherman and were often mentioned in the social pages of the town from around 1915 through to the late 1930's. He was involved in the local Chamber of Commerce and the local branch of the ANA with his wife being president in 1928. Ernest and his wife lived at "Glencoe" a substantial property on the corner of Timor and Ryot Streets . Back to Warrnambool celebrations were an important event on the social calendar and were run over a number of years in the town. Some of the events held over the week included processions, sports Carnivals, concerts, card playing, Church services and local tourist events.Reginald Stoneham the composer of the song , "Back to Warrnambool,"was born in 1879 and died March 1942. He was a popular accompanist and recording artist in the early part of the 20th century. Other songs which he wrote include All for Australia, The drover, Bendigo for the weekly Times, Mildura and Home to Ballaraat.He also penned music under the name Alberto Algrati which were his middle names.This recording is a valuable piece of Warrnambool's history as it provides an original version of the song as it was sung at the time and also as a piece of Reg Stonehams work. This book belonged to Robert Giles. He obtained it in 1914 and the bookseller was Mrs Tilly Rowan who was a well-known businesswoman in Warrnambool with a book shop and newsagency in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street. Robert Giles (1895-1967) was born in Wangoom and went to the Wangoom State School and the Warrnambool Agricultural High School. He served in World War One and worked at the State Savings Bank in Warrnambool from 1911 to 1921 (excluding war service). He later worked in banks in Koroit, other Victorian country districts and Melbourne and retired to Mailors Flat. He was married to Vera King and they had one child, Joyce Aurelin. A Warrnambool branch of the Savings Bank was opened in Warrnambool in 1859 and it moved into a new building in Timor Street in 1885. (This building in now part of the Archie Graham Senior Citizens’ Centre). The State Savings Bank became the State Bank of Victoria in 1980 and in 1990 was subsumed into the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This book is retained because it belonged to Robert Giles who lived in the Warrnambool area for part of his life and who worked at the State Savings Bank in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 408 pages. The cover is red with a gold-coloured image of a horse and a mounted policeman on the front cover and gold printing on the spine. The Box Brownie camera was developed by Frank Brownell in the late 19th century. It was marketed by Eastman Kodak of U.S.A. and was a camera with a simple lens. It provided snapshots at a low cost and was the most widely-used camera by families in the first half of the 20th century. This item was the No. 2 model which was sold from 1901 to 1935. This item was given to Olive O’Donnell when she was ten years old. The donor was Miss Florence Lake of ‘Lyndoch’ in Warrnambool. She was noted for giving presents, usually at Christmas time, to the children of her employees and other children in the Warrnambool area. Olive O’Donnell’s father worked for Miss Lake for 45 years. The property of ‘Lyndoch’ near the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool was established by a Melbourne businessman, George Rolfe, late in the 19th century and Miss Lake was one of the two stepdaughters of George Rolfe who inherited the property. Miss Florence Lake built a house at Lyndoch which today forms part of the aged care facility established when the property was sold. This camera is of interest for two reasons: 1. It is an example of the Box Brownie camera which was a very popular camera owned by many Australians in the first half of the 20th century. 2. It is an example of the type of present given to children by the Warrnambool philanthropist, Florence Lake. She resided at ‘Lyndoch’ and was well-known in the Warrnambool community in the 20th century. This is a rectangular-shaped black metal box. A metal clip acts as an opening and closing device for inserting a film. A yellow and black film is enclosed at one end of the box. A handle is on the top of the box and is attached by metal clips. This packaging formed part of a container holding Sungold Milk in 1978. Sungold Dairies were based in Kepler Street Warrnambool before moving to Verdon Street. In 1988 the site in Verdon Street was sold to Macdonalds fast food business and later to Guyetts funeral business. Sungold milk is now produced at the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford and today is the chief local supplier of fresh milk. This packaging, produced when the business was located in Verdon Street, was made to mark the centenary of the wreck of the Loch Ard. This ship, wrecked in 1878 near Port Campbell, attracted much attention, not only because of the loss of over 50 lives, but also because the story of the two survivors has become part of local folklore. This packaging is of minor interest as a reminder of the promotional material produced at the time of the centenary of the wreck of the Loch Ard in 1978.This is the cut-down piece of packaging that contained fresh milk. It is one piece of light card folded to make a rectangular-shaped container. This book was given in 1943 by the Warrnambool Technical School to Joyce Goodall. Considering that World War Two was in progress at the time, the book was an expensive one to be given as a school prize. But the donor was Miss Florence Lake, the daughter of John and Annie Lake and the step-daughter of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, near the Hopkins River mouth. Miss Lake inherited the property and built the residence known as Lyndoch that is today part of the Lyndoch Aged Care Facility. Miss Lake was known for her philanthropy and community work in Warrnambool. John King’s name has been crossed out in the book as he was no longer Principal in 1943. He was the founding principal of Warrnambool Technical School in 1911 and remained there for 29 years. The Goodall family established Wanstead Farm in East Warrnambool in the 19th century and Joyce Goodall was descended from the Mortlake branch of that family.This book is of interest because of its association in 1943 with Joyce Goodall, Florence Lake and Warrnambool Technical School. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. The cover is brown with gold lettering and the image of a lion on the front cover and a scroll pattern on the spine. The book has a preface, 41 chapters and an index. There are eight colour plates scattered throughout the text. The book plate on the first page is printed and pasted in and it has typed material added to it. Another inscription has been handwritten in pencil. There are also several notes and quotations handwritten in pencil on the back page. Underwood and Underwood commenced manufacturing stereoscopes and cards in the 1880’s, and by 1900 they were selling 300,000 stereoscopes a year and producing 25,000 cards a day. A large volume of their photographic work survives to this day.A popular item which was in common use around 1900. The cards used, provide a useful view of people and places around that time. They were pioneers in the field of news photography. This album contains a collection of family photos, greeting cards and hand drawn floral emblems. Among the photographs are two which have details on them: a young girl named Margaret Clarke aged 8 1870 and another of Charles Alexander Clarke. The photographers are from many places including Britain, Melbourne, Portland and a number by Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke was one of Warrnambool’s more important photographers, operating a business for thirty years in the town. He also worked as an artist and taught art in local schools. He painted a number of versions of Tower Hill. He died in 1918 at the age of 91.This album shows a collection of photographs and cards which were important to families in the later part of the 19th century. It has artistic and historical significance, with the photographs in particular depicting many different styles of clothing and household details of the time. Junction (Lake Guy) Dam is a 'slab and buttress' type wall. A timber frame is built and then filled with concrete. The first batch of concrete was placed in September, 1940. By June, 1941 the buttresses were finished to a height safe from floods and in October of that year a flood of 2,800 cusecs occurred but with only slight damage to the installations. Industrial trouble caused some delays but there was also slow progress on the part of the contractor and the work was taken over by the S.E.C., terminating the contract. The dam was completed in March, 1944. A walkway was made through the dam wall. Lake Guy was named after Mr. L.T. Guy who was the Resident engineer, in charge of construction work and associated activities on the Kiewa Area from 1939 to November 1946Photos of the construction of the Junction Dam detail the harsh conditions faced by construction workers, building dams and villages to accommodate workers in the 1940s to the 1950s. It was thought that these developments would reduce, if not eliminate, the requirement for coal driven power stations. Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places.
