Several items were given by a seafarer, Mr Nicholas Garlick (1926-2009) into the care of Father Brady who retired from St Pauls Cathedral, Melbourne in 2018. Father Brady later donated the collection of objects, documents and an extensive collection of cruise ship menus (1937-end of 20thC) to the Mission via the intermediary William Hastie, volunteer at the Mission for Seafarers. One of the reasons the gift has been accepted is because there are a number of items that relate to images or records of visits in the collection. Crews of ships such as the Orontes and the Orsova were regular donors to the Mission in the 20th century. Launched in 1929, the Orient Line passenger ship SS Orontes was one of the longest serving on the England to Australia route, carrying tens of thousands of British and European migrants to new lives in Australia from 1948 to 1962 and Nicholas Garlick may have worked on the ship during that time. During World War II, Orontes became a troopship, serving that role from 1940 to 1947.Glass ashtray or trinket dish with black and white printed transfer image of the RMS Orontes at sea.S.S.ORONTESss orontes, nicholas garlick (1926-2009), father brady, william hastie, nick garlick, ship engineer, passager ship, ship liner, orient line, migrant ship, troopship, ww2, smoking

The last remaining and most famous of all the clipper ships, Cutty Stark, is today preserved for posterity in a dry dock in Greenwich, UK. Launched in November 1869 at Dumbarton on Clyde she was considered the fastest ship of the day. Designed and constructed by Hercules Linton and William D Scott, she was built to carry tea from China and beat the Thermopylae. Her fastest recorded speed was 12.5 knots by sailing 363 miles in 24 hours. The dimensions of both ships were very similar: length 64.7m (212 feet), Beam 11 =m (36 feet), Depth of hold 6.4m (21 feet). Tonnage: Cutty Stark: 921, Thermopyalae 948. With many centuries of shipbuilding it was difficult to find good oak in England. The oak frames occupied excessive space in the cargo hold. A composite building technique was sued with the hull being made out of wooded panelled iron frames. Cutty stark was built with an elm keel and teak planking. Her last passage carrying tea was in 1877. in 1895 she was sold to a Portuguese owner. in 1883, the Cutty Stark joined the Australian wool trade, loaning wool from ports, including Melbourne, bound for the UKLarge model of the Cutty Stark in a "Handcrafted/ Mr Robert McFeeters/ Vermont 19"98" "Display Case/ Mr Ivan Nemanic/ Montrose 1990" "Cutty Stark/ Buil 1869/ Glasgow/

This scrapbook holds numerous newspaper clippings recording events, functions and visits to the Seamen's Mission starting in 1896 through to 1902, although a few documents date from 1895. These dates coincide with the commencement of Mr WHC Darvall's various terms of office with the Mission from the mid 1890s. Mr Darvall's involvement with the Mission possibly stems from his arrival in Victoria in 1853 part working his passage from England as a purser on the migrant ship Asia. He first encountered Captain Pascoe on arrival at Williamstown who was also on the Mission executive when Darvall returned to Melbourne from Beechworth in 1871. 1898: Death of Captain Crawford Pasco with a photographic portrait. 1899: Small ink sketch by artist Charles Georges Darvall, WHC Darvall's cousin. 1900 Foundation of Geelong mission 1901: Queen Victoria's death (22 January) Australian Federation (1st January) Boer War (189-1902) Death of chaplain Ebenezer James Nautical exhibition On the inside of the rear cover of the book a plan of Williamstown has been pasted with no date provided. Colonization Circulars were published in England from 1843 t0 1873, volumes 1 to 32. They were produced by Her Majesty's Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners. Designed as occasional or annual handbooks to inform prospective migrants about life, travel, and economic conditions in British colonies, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. Key information included: Travel Details: Costs and lengths of sea passages, and notes on assisted passage schemes. Economic Data: Prevailing local wages, labour demands, and retail prices for provisions and clothing. Official Regulations: Names and duties of emigration officers, summaries of passenger acts, and rules for land sales or crown land disposal. Practical Advice: Suggested outfit requirements for the voyage and guidelines for settlers. Colonial Land and Emigration Commission was created in 1840 to undertake the duties of two earlier and overlapping authorities under the supervision of the secretary of state: the Colonisation Commissioners for South Australia and the Agent General for Emigration. In 1855 it became the Emigration Commission. The commission's powers were gradually given up to the larger colonies as they obtained self-government, and after 1873 it was responsible only for controlling the importation of Indian labour into sugar-producing colonies. It was abolished in 1878 and an Emigration Department was then set up in the Colonial Office. This department was merged with the General Department in 1894, and abolished altogether in 1896. Soft cover. Title written in Royal Blue on front cover. Feint newspaper articles as background on both front and back covers. 38pp. Printed by Acacia Press Pty. Ltd. ISBN 0947158170. Published by Macbeth Genealogical Books, Hampton. The book is a facsimile of the Colonization Circular in May, 1854. No diagrams. colonization circular, emigration, travel

Has a white sticker attached to the top right hand corner with red handwritten 'M47'. The box has a small metal button on bottom section that when pushed opens the box. The leather is damaged and fraying around the edges and corners of the box and there are various scratch marks that have removed the black paint/dye from the leather in places. Inside, the box lid is lined with padded fabric (likely silk or satin), has the manufacturer details printed at the centre of lid. There is a small blue ink mark on the fabric in the top left of the inside of the lid and minor holes and wear in the upper portion of the lid. The bottom part of the box is a mount covered in blue velvet. The mount and velvet have a depression in the shape of the main Royal Red Cross (RRC) medal and ribbon. The velvet is dusty and has some fibres in the creases and across the whole area. "The badge for the RRC is in the shape of a golden cross, 1.375 inches (3.49 cm) wide, the obverse enamelled red, with a circular medallion, bearing an effigy of the reigning monarch at its centre. The words "Faith", "Hope" and "Charity" are inscribed on the upper limbs of the cross, with the year "1883" in the lower limb.
