Pencil, Souvenir Pencil x 2, 1960s
These two pencils have been marked with names to serve as advertising items and souvenirs. One is from Zanos’ Elite Café of 80 Liebig Street. This café operated in the 1950s and 60s. The other is from the Jaycee 20th Victorian Zone Conference of 1965 held in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) was established in the early 1950s to advance business and encourage civic leadership in its members. The Briquette Company was a sponsor of the 1965 Conference. These pencils are of minor interest as examples of advertising techniques used in the second half of the 20th century. Today the souvenir item is more likely to be in the form of a biro or a computer accessoryThese are two circular lead pencils, one advertising Zanos’ Elite Café, which is unsharpened and silver in colour and one advertising the Jaycee 20th Victorian Zone Conference of 1965 and Briquettes which is of white and red colouring.1. ‘Zanos’ Elite Café, 80 Liebig Street, Warrnambool, Phone 2236’ 2. ‘ Jaycee 20th Victorian Zone Conference, Warrnambool, 1965, Bernie Briquette says- Enjoy the Friendly Warmth of Briquettes’ zanos’ elite café, warrnambool jaycees, warrnambool -

Pencil, Pontings Timber & Hardware, Mid to end of 20th century
This is a pencil used by carpenters and builders and other tradesmen on site. It has been produced in a flattened shape to prevent it from rolling away. The pencil advertises a Warrnambool business, Pontings Timber and Hardware. This business was founded in 1923 by brothers Walter and Len Ponting. Three of Walter’s sons took over the business in the 1940s and today it is still operated by members of the Ponting family. The business is at 110 to 114 Kepler Street. This pencil is of interest as it advertises a prominent Warrnambool business, Pontings Timber & Hardware. This business has operated in Warrnambool for 95 years. This is a rectangular-shaped wooden pencil with a yellow coating and graphite inserted inside the wood. There is printing on both sides of the pencil. It has been sharpened at one end and part of the pencil has been used up. ‘Pontings Timber & Hardware PH 62..’ ‘Stanley Bos…’ pontings, timber & hardware, warrnambool history -

Pencil, Fun 4 Kids Festival, Early 21st century
This pencil is a souvenir of the Fun 4 Kids Festival, a children’s festival run by Warrnambool City Council from 1999 to 2018. It was held during a week in winter on the Civic Green at the corner of Timor and Liebig Streets with the site including temporary buildings as well as the adjoining permanent buildings. The festival was highly regarded and won the 2015 Gold Australian Tourism Award. Declining numbers and increasing costs led to its demise in 2018.This pencil is a memento of Fun 4 Kids, a children’s festival run by the Warrnambool City Council. Existing for 19 years, it was one of the longest surviving children’s festivals in Australia. This is a round wooden pencil containing a thin sliver of graphite. The pencil has a metal band and a rubber at one end and is sharpened at the other end. The pencil has an orange covering, black lettering and an image of a child and a sun.Fun 4 Kids Festivalfun 4 kids warrnambool -

Domestic object - Pencil, 19th Century
This pencil was found in 1946 by Mr Jim Pelling when an old wall was being pulled down in Warrnambool. This type of pen would have been used in the 19th century and apparently produced good legible writing and the lead point never wore out. No information is available on Jim Pelling or the location of the wall.Although this pencil has no known provenance it is of considerable interest because of its finding in an old wall in Warrnambool and because of its antiquarian value. It is a good example of a writing tool of the past and the ivory handle is of particular interest. This is a pencil with a handle made of ivory with a sharpened point of metallic lead screwed on the end of it. The end of the handle has an ornamental column shape. The lead at the end is slightly bent. Accompanying the pencil is an extract from a 1946 Warrnambool Standard detailing the finding of the pencil and some handwriting from a later date. The newspaper extract is pasted on to a piece of cardboard (a piece of a Rice Bubbles packet). In blue handwriting: ‘Extract from 1946 Warrnambool Standard’ and ‘Given to Warrnambool Historical Society by Mr J. Pelling 1970’jim pelling, metallic lead pencil, warrnambool history -

Capewell, the Eltham Butcher. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
