The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1992 and 1996. This plaque was erected in the Williamstown Sailors' Rest, the former skating ring in Thompson Street. It's one the three memorials to Ethel Godfrey with the stained glass window in the St Peter chapel in the Central Institute (See 0064.2) ) and the optus sectile plaque in the 1888 Port Melbourne Institute (See 2053) . This plaque was moved to the Nelson Place building when the Mission purchased the E,S&A Bank in 1943. In 1982, the plaque ws removed from the Williamstown mission along with 4 other plaques, objects and furniture to furnish the chapel of the new Flagstaff Maritime Museum. The Manifolds were a significant pioneering pastoral family in Western Victoria. The donated riding jodhpurs originally belonged to Mrs Edward Manifold, formally Beatrice Mary Synnot Anderson. This bike belonged to Wally Paten who worked in the Orbost Butter Factory in the 1940's. Wally's father, Thomas Paten came to Orbost in 1893 and began growing fancy seeds in 1907 for H. James. He built the first levee bank in Orbost (ref. Mary Gilbert). The Comet bike was distributed by the Myer Emporium. "Comet:" was their house brand. They also sold the "Peter Pan". It was named "The Comet" probably because it was a fast bike. At the time it was an expensive bike . Ted Waterford made headlines riding Melbourne to Adelaide one way then return on a Comet in 1932.Bicycles have been a part of Australian life for more than 140 years. The bicycle soon began competing with the horse as a convenient and economical way for people to get around. This bicycle is an example of an early style which was used by an Orbost local.A man's road bicycle. It has 26inch wheels, back pedal brakes and has a wire basket attached to the curved handle bars. There is a leather seat in poor condition. The back wheel has a mudguard painted white. The bike is ungeared. This is probably the original frame with newer wheels. This is the 14th edition of the magazine. This magazine belonged to William Hunter (1893-1971), a resident of Tatura and Mallacoota. He was a soldier, surveyor and amateur naturalist. Peter Dawson was a Distiller and Whisky Merchantat 99 Maxwell Street, Glasgow. By 1891 Dawson had already made a name for himself in the United Kingdom as a blender of whisky and practical distiller. Nicholson Street was remade in 1984 with new kerb alignments, the introduction of red brick paving and the planting of oak trees.
