Phil BERRY (1963 - ) Born Ballarat Completing a Master of Arts at the University of Ballarat (now Federation) in 2012, he workes as a sessional staff member for the Arts Academy. Artist Phil Berry recalled ‘As a child I spent the majority of my holidays at my uncle and auntie’s. Uncle Jack was a prisoner of War at Changi during World War 2. Repatriated to Australia he was emaciated and clutched his prize possession, an old spoon. Part of his daily life during the extreme hardship of the camp, the spoon was a symbol of his survival, a constant in extreme uncertainty.’ ‘Home again Jack married, started a family and embraced peace. A kind and gentle man, I was fortunate to have known him. The coming of peace had given back what war had nearly taken away.’ This item won the Lucato Peace Prize and is part of the Federation University Art Collection. William Baragwanath joined the Victorian Department of Mines in 1897, was director of the geological survey (1922-4), Chief Mining Surveyor (1924-43), Secretary for Mines (1932-34), consultant to the Department of Mines (1943-50) . He was born at Durham Lead on 1 August 1878 and was a former student of the Ballarat School of Mines. Baragwanath was president of the Royal society of Victoria (1943-44) and a councillor of the Ballarat School of Mines (1916-1950). After Baragwanath's death on 20 September 1966 the Department of Minerals and Energy (Geological Survey division) donated a number of Baragwanath's items to the Ballarat School of Mines, including this collection. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Malleefowls (Leipoa Ocellata) are shy, ground-dwelling birds that make their homes in Mallee country. The nearby Wyperfeld National Park in Hopetoun is a known habitat. The malleefowl mounds are one of the most fascinating things about the malleefowl. Unlike most birds, they don’t build nests in trees or on the ground. Instead, they create large nesting mounds of sand, soil, and organic material, sometimes up to 5 metres in diameter and 1 metre in height. After the female malleefowl lays the eggs, the heat generated by the decomposition of the organic material inside the mound incubates them. The male bird constantly adjusts the temperature by adding or removing material. It’s a process that can take several months and requires meticulous care, making the malleefowl parents some of the most dedicated. Their breeding season is between September and January, and use the same malleefowl mounds for multiple seasons. Malleefowl chicks often hatch from November to January. Mallee is a type of bushland found in parts of Victoria and South Australia. It’s made up of scraggly, multi-stemmed eucalyptus trees that are very tough and can survive in dry, harsh conditions.
