Fredrick Charles Dix enlisted 8th July 1915 at Castlemaine (at the time he was living with his Mother and stepfather in Fryers Town) after serving in the Senior Cadets. He was taken on by the 9th Light horse and sent to Egypt for further training. Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 11 January 1916.He served in France and was wounded by shrapnel in the eye socket but eventually returned to active duty on the front.He returned to Australia 6 September 1919 Sgt. F. C. Dix 1790 9th light horse 13th reinforcement 13 Field Artillery Brigade where he (several times) attained the rank of Sergeant. He also served during WWII at Nowra as a driver. The Mena Camp, Egypt, was the training camp for the 1st Australian Imperial Forces(AIF) before the Landing at Gallipoli. The camp was located 16Kms from Cairo.Built around Mena House, it was a luxury hotel built next to the Pyramids of Giza (originally spelt Gizeh) supplied with its own purpose built tram-line to Cairo. The centre road up the middle of the camp was known as Artillery Road. Believed to be "George Goulding No. 4886" Britain. The collar badge is that of the Suffolk Regiment. Service of George Frederick Goulding, British Army Boer, South Africa. He was NR 4886 Suffolk Regiment DOB c1878. POB White Chapel, London. Served 1899-1902 Cape Colony, Colesberg, Transvaal - with the Mounted Infantry. WW1 - DOE 11 Dec 15, Middlesex Regiment 5 Bm. (A Reserve Bn). Discharged from Middlesex 19 Apr 1916. M.U. Number 1710 Pte. The British I.W.M. also shows he served in the Royal Field Artillery in WW1. That info is not available. Rank Gunner NR L/10626.This is a black and white portrait of a British soldier waist upwards. He is in uniform, wearing two medals. One medal on the soldier has 3 bars, the other has 2 bars. His belt is probably white. The badges on his collar appear to be a Castle with gate. The soldier is hatless. The soldier in the photo is Nr 1366, Dvr Donald GILLIES of the 4th Field Artillery Brigade. The grey horse, Bess, was blinded by shell fire. The bay horse was Lady. Embarked for England 26.11.17, embarked for France 17.7.18, KIA 16.8.18 at Tincourt, France. The photo was most likely taken in Croydon, South London at the home of Stephen Tully, the elder man sitting in the photo. Betty Tully is in front of him, Eileen in the white dress. The lady in the black dress is Annie Parker. The photo was taken prior to Kedge embarking for France. Refer to Ct.
