The old Diamond Street bridge in Eltham had a raised section seen here and a lower section, the railings of which can just be seen. The upper pedestrian crossing provided continual access for foot traffic during times of flood. Matron (Major) Olive Dorothy PASCHKE No VX38812 enlisted in the AAMC on 3.8.40 age 35 years. Promoted to Matron 8.1.1941, posted to 10th AGH on 11.1.1941, embarked for Malaya 3.2.1941 disembarking 18.2.1941, awarded the RRC 1st Class 1.1.1942 in the New Years Honors list signed by Gordon Bennett, detached to 2/4th CCS on 6.1.1942, embarked from Singapore 12.2.1942 for Australia. She was serving in Singapore when the Japanese invaded. She with many other Nurses during the bombing left on the ill fated "Vyner Brooke" which was later bombed by the Japanese in the Sundra Straits near Banka Island. Abandoning the ship she and 5 other Nurses drifted away on a raft and never seen again on 14.2.42. Many others became POW,s, drowned or murdered by the Japanese. Her records state believed killed on or after 11.2.142 dated 8.6.1944 then Now reported missing and for official purposes presumed dead, dated 11.4.1945. Records state she was granted the promotion of Major in 1943. Significant, one of the earliest details of the Red Cross Society in WW1 Very significant, very rare.Paper poster, headed Red Cross Society. Asking for interested citizen in the Camberwell/Canterbury area to form committees to raise 600 pounds to buy a fitted out Motor Ambulance to send over to France as part of the war effort. In October 1914 not one motor Ambulance was on the French front as the War office had banned any Red Cross involvement with wounded soldiers. Once General Kitchener was made aware of this situation he immediately overruled the ban and 100 motor ambulances and 1000 Nurses were sent to France. This fund raising by Camberwell Residents for a Motor Ambulance to be sent to France would have been among the first in WW1.See photo for complete details

A photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. This photo shows Matron Dorrie Vines with three residents. Names around the photo L to R: Lee Henneberry, Doreen Devlin, and Betty Henderson. The newspaper article from The Age was published on 28 August 1959 and mentions Miss Vines has worked at Stanhope since 1946 when she returned from war service. She had been a trained nurse and served in Middle East and New Guinea with the RAANC. She had been awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross and was mentioned in despatches. Mention of the routine of the house include that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equipped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member joins them for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year and they have informal dances at Stanhope. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01834. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Generally Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The article details the war time recollections of Vivian Bullwinkel, sole survivor of the Japanese massacre of Australian nurses in 1942. The Australian Army nurses, with 200 civilians, were aboard the SS Vyner Brook when the Japanese bombed and sank the ship. After ten hours, twenty four nurses survived to make it ashore on Banka Island. The Japanese took them prisoner and then proceeded to shoot them all, after first bayoneting forty Bristish prisoners. Vivian was shot in the side and pretended she was dead. Vivian credits her initial survival to the duty she felt to a fellow survivor of the massacre, a British man. They then had to make the decision that giving themselves up to the Japanese was their best chance of survival. After threes years as a POW Vivian had lost alot of weight and seen many die, but she had continued to care for those that were her patients. More than 50 years later Vivian is to return to Banka Island as and honoured guest of Indonesia, to chose the site of of a memorial to her dead comrades. Vivian avoids talking in detail about her POW experiences but she does have strong views on selling Australian land to Japanese investors. The Japanese government had recently apologised for the atrocities they committed, but Vivian believes the apology was not specific enough. Vivian Statham (nee Bullwinkel) visits Melbourne from her home in Perth to launch the National Mutual Nurses' Month, taking place throughout May. The biggest woman's project of the bicentennial, Nurses' Month will involve nurses throughout Australia. Though Vivian is now retired she is still very involved and concerned about the nursing world. Possibly best known as the courageous lone survivour of the massacre of Australian Army nurses by the Japanese in World War Two, Vivian went on to be matron of the Repatriation Hospital and then Fairfield Hospital. Few people realise the importance of the Plastic Surgery Unit, a small section of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) that probably contributes more to human happiness than any other. The unit rebuilds smashed and burned faces and limbs. Sister Margaret Tisdall is sister-in-charge of the AIF Plastic Unit now attached to Heidelberg Hospital and says the work is essential as they help with the restoration of function. Margaret was attached to the 3rd AGH and went to England in 1940, later on to Egypt. where she joined the Plastic Unit when it was formed at the 2nd AGH. A funeral service was held for Col Nellie Espie (retd) at St Mary's Cathedral, Hobart, on August 22. Nellie, a former Director of Army Nursing dies on August 15, aged 92. Nellie was born in Tasmania in 1924, trained as a nurse in the 1940's and became an Army nurse when the Korean War broke out. She was commissioned as a lieutenant with the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC) and posted to Ingleburn, NSW in 1951. She went on to be a Ward Sister and Charge Sister in Japan, Korea, Duntroon, Malaya, Queensland and Victoria. 1969 saw Col Espie become Matron of the Australian Field Hospital at Vung Tau in South Vietnam. by the time she was discharged from the service in 1981 she was Matron in Chief of the RAANC and Director of Army Nursing. Nellie continued to take an active role in the RAANC after her retirement. The Victorian Returned Services League(RSL) presented a Festival of Empire and Remembrance. The RSL Memoriall Band played martial airs as all branches of the services and representatives from all parts if the Empire marched down the centre aisle to take their seats on the stage.
