This postcard depicts the view down Bridge Street from east of Maria Street (Main Road) circa 1910. A man on a horse stands in the foreground. J.H. Clark Photo is stated under the title. From the same collection as accession no. 00778, (Yarra at Eltham) - sent from Eltham and addressed to "Mr J. L. Brown, "Elthamville", Tinning Street, Brunswick" "with love from Nellie" who was most probably a member of the extended Brown family, and no. 00779 (Pond near Eltham Park). "Dear John, As you see " can be ascertained on the reverse of this card. Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century. Photographer: J.H. Clark John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. His bootmaker shop remains today beside the Whitecloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the area from the early 20th century. There are a couple of images of Eltham taken by Clark Bros. in the Eltham District Historical Society collection, one such example being Hunniford’s Post Office with Miss Anne Hunniford out front (EDHS_00140 - marked on the back of the print, Clark Bros., 25 Thomas St. Windsor), which would date this image between c.1894 and 1914. Other early images of Eltham taken by John Henry Clark are marked on the face “J. H. Clark Photo” and it is assumed these are dated between 1914 and 1930. It is noted that the Grant of Probate for John H Clark of Eltham South dated 5 April !957 (513/387) records his occupation as "X Photographer".Sending postcards to family and friends including short messages was a common form of communication in the early 20th century. This original photograph is printed on Kodak photo postcard paper dating from 1908-1914. It belonged to the Anthony family who sent six children to Williamstown Grammar. The eldest, Queenie Anthony, commenced in 1908. In 1914, when the original building was gifted to the Education Department to establish Williamstown High School, Queenie and her siblings remained with Mabel Molland, moving to Holy Trinity Hall, to complete their primary school years. The teacher seated at the right is not Mabel Molland, who commenced in 1911. This is possibly Miss Molland's predecessor, Miss Towl. Research is underway to identify students in the photograph.Black and white photograph of a group of students in four rows with Denis Gerity standing at the left and a woman seated at the right. Information supplied by Stephen Trembath. Warwick Farm was established by my late grand parents Polly (nee Mary Ann Cole) and George Barratt and their 5 children George Jnr, William, James, John (my maternal Grand Father) and Teddy. Their story is told in a book "The wine of Courage" written in 1977 by N.M. Roberts ISBN 0 7223 1003. Their story started when their bank closed their doors on 13 April 1893 and they lost their cafe business in South Melbourne. Two days later, they were ready to head for a new start in Queensland when they saw in the morning paper that the Dandenong Ranges had been thrown open to land release to people. A few days later, having been granted land they headed to Ferntree Gully. From there they walked to the new holding in what would become Olinda. Then George with his sons help had to build a shelter for the family for the night. They chose to name the property "Warwick Farm". Work on the house started a few days later with help from neighbours Mr. Dodd, Mr Beattie, the O'Sheas and others. Come November, Ruby was born. Then bushfire burnt down the newly built house. Back to a bark hut until another house could be built. The new house became a guest house at the suggestion of a neighbour, when George couldn't sell timber and was waiting for crops. The first guests visited in 1898 and another baby, Percival, was born. ....................................................... It was George's son Jim, who was a skilled carpenter and axeman who extended the home to take from 12 to 30 guests. In 1950 Warwick Farm became the home of distinguished writer and journalist C.E.Sayers for a number of years.Photo Series Pictorial Postcard # 981 showing the property Warwick Farm on Olinda Road.Printed on back: PHOTO SERIES Pictorial Postcards. Entrance to Gardens (1926) The Port Fairy Botanical Gardens were formed in 1856 making it one of the earliest gardens in Victoria. The first curator was James Prior, he was paid fifty-two pounds per annum. He was an outstanding curator having been apprenticed to the trade in England at the age of 12, his brother Edward in later years was the Curator of the Koroit Gardens. Prior retired in 1903. During the years of his curatorship Port Fairy was said to have the best gardens outside the city of Melbourne, he was constantly in touch with Baron Von Mueller and later Guilfoyle of the Royal Botanical Gardens of Melbourne. In the early years plants from all over the world were planted here with varying rates of success many of them sent by Baron Von Mueller. In the 1930’ and 40’s the gardens were still very beautiful, and the curator was Roy Manuell. The beautiful iron gates at the entrance were destroyed in the 1946 floods and were replaced in 1989 using some of the material from the original gates. From the 1950’s on the gardens went into a state of decline, much being taken up by the caravan park until in 1986, after a public meeting ‘Friends of the Gardens’ was founded when the entrance section was restored.
