This is a standard British Army Pigeon Service Message Book which was issued to Australian Army units during World War One. This Pigeon Service Message Book has no known local provenance but it is a very interesting memento of World War One.This is a British Army Pigeon Service Message Book which consists of a number of sheets of paper stapled into a cardboard cover protected with black leatherette. The writing on the front cover is stencilled in white. The ends of the cover are held together by a black elastic strap. The strap has now lost its elasticity. Inside the front cover is a printed sheet indicating the use of the book and the care of the pigeons. There are two leatherette tubes attached to the back cover which would have held writing implements. The book material consists of a top sheet printed with space for the message details, and sheets of carbon paper for two copies of the message. There is a piece of cardboard backing the carbon paper. None of the message pages has been used. The staples have rusted and the sides of the paper material are stained. The cover is a little crumpled and dirty. ‘Army Book 418’ ‘Pigeon Service Message Book’ world war one, british army pigeon service message book

Possibly donated by the Warrnambool Council when Flagstaff Hill was established in 1975, given the descriptive labels on the various pigeon holes describing office paperwork that the item was used to organise.Significant as it was probably an early piece of furniture and probably commissioned by the Warrnambool council around the late 19th century. Given the rich colour of the wood it could be made from blackwood, also the type of nails used indicate the item is prior to 1900.Shelves wooden base & elaborate pigeon hole top section made of wood top separates from baseLabels indication of item age "1876-1877" & "Borough Rolls"flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village

Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023 Photographer notations on slide: "Shrine and multitude afield B62" Description: “Shrine and multitude afield” On Armistice Day, 11 November 1934, an estimated third of Melbourne’s population, assembled for the Dedication Ceremony of the Shrine of Remembrance by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester. The Argus reported the following day: “10,000 Pigeons Released. With whirring wings, 10,000 pigeons rose above the Shrine like a huge puff of smoke when they were released from the second balcony at 11.43am, after the ceremony of dedication. The pigeons had come from all parts of the metropolitan area and from places as far away as Shepparton, Broadford, and Trentham. They hovered above the Shrine for a moment or two, taking their bearings, and then flew away toward their homes. A boy at Burnley reported later that one of his pigeons had returned and entered its box two minutes after the liberation. The pigeons were assembled in metropolitan clubrooms of the Victorian Homing Pigeon Association on Saturday night, and transported in 75 panniers to the Shrine, carried up stairways, and placed in readiness on the balcony. A man remained in charge of them all night. In the early hours of the morning he had a busy time covering the panniers with a tarpaulin to protect the birds from the rain.” In the foreground can be seen three women standing with their backs to the Shrine, looking upwards. In the same coverage, The Argus noted: “Women, unconscious probably of the fact that they were resorting to the principle of the periscope of the days of the war which had brought this vast assemblage together, turned their backs upon the scene the better to view it by looking into mirrors held high in one hand.” FRC Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023. This cabinet would have been made in the early 20th century for as office or home office furniture. It's neat brass lock and key gives the contents some basic security but could be easily tampered with. At some stage there were two additional divisions in the top row of pigeon holes, which would make fifteen compartments of equal size available. A cabinet such as this could be used to classify or sort items, for example, mail for different people, or categories of business papers such as bills, orders, receipts, pay book, bank book and so on.This cabinet represents the type of furniture available for offices and businesses in the early 20th century. It shows the hardware in use and the design detail such as the raised edges around the top of the cabinet.Cabinet or cupboard, stained dark brown and lacquered. Secure office storage with a lock and a key. Hinged, lift-up front panel door folds back against the lid. The inside is divided into thirteen compartments or pigeon holes.
