In 1974, this 18 foot (5.5 meter) diesel-powered workboat was one of the last boats built to operate from the pilot cutter Wyuna. These boats were used to transfer pilots from the Wyuna to the ship being serviced or vice versa. Until 1946 they were propelled by two oars then simplex two-stroke petrol engines were fitted followed by diesel engines. The Pilot Service Shipwrights built the boats in a shed which stood on the site of the present Pilot Station, Tobin Drive, North of Shortland Bluff. The design is based on a Gig and was developed by the Pilots as suitable for the severe conditions at the entrance to Port Phillip. The Australian pilot vessel and steam yacht Alvina had a long and varied career. It was built in the UK as a private yacht, 1891 and in 1903 came to Australia to commence in the pilot service at Port Phillip Heads. This model of the pilot ship is held by the nearby Queenscliff Maritime Museum in Victoria. In 1923 the larger Akuna took over from the Alvina, which then served as an excursion steamer and ferry in Westernport Bay for another 10 years when in 1933 it was replaced by an ex-Sydney vehicular ferry displaced by the new Harbour Bridge. Alvina was not scrapped until 1961. Pilots would be transferred by the Wyuna's workboat to the vessel requiring pilotage while it was stopped dead in the water, with shelter provided by the vessel itself. In the early 1970s the pilot service started using fast launches to allow pilots to board while ships were still underway, and in 1979 the Wyuna was sold to the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania as a training vessel. She continued in that role until 2004 when sold to Mineralogy Pty Ltd as an accommodation vessel. In September 2013 she was donated to the Western Port Oberon Association for the Victorian Maritime Centre currently at Crib Point. For a time she was docked at Beauty Point, Tasmania, and after being refurbished for 18 months she was to be moved to Docklands in Melbourne, Victoria. After this berth became unavailable the vessel was docked at Inspection Head Wharf in Beauty Point. After a period there it was towed into Bell Bay where she lays at anchor as of January 2016. Two legatees with James Tierney and his Corps of Commissionaires service medal. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. He also became one of the two Commissionaires at the Shrine of Remembrance for 12 years up to 1953. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. A summary: "The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in London 1859 by Sir Edward Walter KCB. The original aim was to provide to employment and welfare support for veterans of the Crimean War. Returning from Manila in 1856 with a cargo of rice, sugar and rope. Mountain Maid was wrecked after colliding with the Victorian steamer, SS Queen. No lives were lost but the ship sank quickly and the crew was forced to swim for their lives. The pilot onboard Mountain Maid was dismissed from the Pilot service, as he'd already run two other ships aground before changing direction and causing the collision with SS Queen (Lomdahl 1992:Mountain Maid). the Akuna started life as a 210ft moto yacht 'Komet', built in 1911 for the German Administraror of New Guinea. When wa started in 1914 the German Navy took it over as an armed patrol boat, but plans were thwarted when she and her 57 crew were captured by a detachment of the Australian Navy and AMEF. Sailed to Sydney as a prize, she was commissioned a monthe later as HMAS Una , She became the first Australian Aircraft carrier when she took a Marrice Farman sea plane , and a BE 2A land plane, along with pilots to New Guinea in Nov. 1914. During and after the war her duty was Patrol and general Purpose vessel in Ner Guinea waters, still listed as a RAN ship in May 1920, decommissioned in 1925. January 1925 as the Akuna she was sold to Port Phillip Pilot Service in Melbourne. In 1953 she was sold for scrap, ending over 40 yrs of reliable service in war and peace time. Of Particular note these charts were used to plot "Rhumb Lines or loxodromes" where a course crosses all Meridians (Lines of latitude and longitude) at the same angle. On Mercator projection charts Rhumb lines are conveniently shown as straight lines and are also lines of constant compass bearing. Rhumb lines are usually longer than the shortest distance between two points. The shortest distance between two points on the earth's surface is called a "Great Circle Route" which is a route on a circular path on the surface of the earth where the centre of that circle is also the centre of the earth. Great Circle Routes on a Mercator Projection are however curves and harder to plot. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .5 RAAF LONG RANGE PLOTTING CHART.
