NP 22-2 (Navigational Plotting) Tasmania. MERCATOR PROJECTION. This series of charts were used for the training of RAAF Navigators. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .3 RAAF PLOTTING CHART AUSTRALIA - SOUTHEAST. NP 27 is Based on LAMBERT CONFORMAL CONIC PROJECTION. This series of charts was used by RAAF Navigators for the planning of RAAF flights. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .4 RAAF LONG RANGE PLOTTING CHART. NP 43-4 AUSTRALIA WESTERN. MERCATOR PROJECTION. This series of maps were used for the planning of RAAF flights. Of Particular note these charts were used to plot "Rhumb Lines or loxodromes" where a course crosses all Meridians (Lines of latitude and longitude) at the same angle. On Mercator projection charts Rhumb lines are conveniently shown as straight lines and are also lines of constant compass bearing. Rhumb lines are usually longer than the shortest distance between two points. The shortest distance between two points on the earth's surface is called a "Great Circle Route" which is a route on a circular path on the surface of the earth where the centre of that circle is also the centre of the earth. Great Circle Routes on a Mercator Projection are however curves and harder to plot. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .5 RAAF LONG RANGE PLOTTING CHART. NP 43-7 SOLOMON ISLANDS. MERCATOR PROJECTION. Used for the planning of RAAF flights. .6 RAAF AIR STAFF PLANNING CHART NS 137-1 DARWIN NORTH WEST. AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT PROJECTION. This series of charts were used for planning by the staff. The whole chart was produced by joining the four quadrant maps together. The charts are based on a single point of tangency (in this case Darwin) and shows radius (distance) in nautical miles to and from that point. A series of charts were produced centred on each of the major airfields in Northern Australia. These charts were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .7 RAAF AIR STAFF PLANNING CHART NS 137-2 DARWIN NORTH EAST. AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT PROJECTION. Used for the planning by the staff. The charts are based on a point of tangency and show radius in nautical miles. .8 RAAF AIR STAFF PLANNING CHART NS 137-4 DARWIN SOUTH WEST. AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT PROJECTION. Used for the planning by the staff. The charts are based on a point of tangency and show radius in nautical miles. .9 RAAF AIR STAFF PLANNING CHART NS 137-3 DARWIN SOUTH EAST. AZIMUTHAL EQUIDISTANT PROJECTION. Used for the planning by the staff. The charts are based on a point of tangency and show radius in nautical miles. .10 TACTICAL PILOTAGE CHART. TPC R-13B. LAMBERT CONFORMAL PROJECTION. Used by pilots for flight planning and could be used in flight if necessary for visual navigation using major ground features shown on the chart. These charts also contained aeronautical information such as airfields, radio navigation beacons and obstructions. Contours and height information was shown in feet to be compatible with aircraft altimeters. Each graticule square also contained a Maximum Safe Elevation Figure (MEF) also in feet. Coverage of this series over Australia's area of interest were produced and printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .11 HYDROGRAPHIC CHART. AUS 158. PORT PHILLIP SOUTH and WEST CHANNELS. PROJECTION TRANSVERSE MERCATOR. Used by all people needing to navigate a vessel. Hydrographic charts were printed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. .12 HYDROGRAPHIC CHART. AUS 157. GEELONG HARBOUR and APPROACHES. PROJECTION TRANSVERSE MERCATOR. Used by all people needing to navigate a vessel. .13 EN ROUTE CHART. AUSTRALIA ERC HIGH. H1 and H2. LAMBERT CONFORMAL CONIC PROJECTION. This series of charts were regularly produced by the RAAF Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) and contained current aeronautical information for pilots. Item in the collection of Gilbert John Mitchell (Jack) Pre WW2 Jack had service for a brief time in the 38th BN Bendigo No 447203. He enlisted in the RAAF on 31.1.1942 No 410686 age 20 years. Embarked for England on 6.1.1943 for further Training. Posted to 166 Sqd RAF Wellington Bombers then posted Operational to No 466 Sqd RAAF flying Halifax Heavy Bombers. On 18.7.1944 he and his crew in MZ313 were on a mission to attack Railway Sidings at Vaires. This was new Aircraft on 11.6.1944. They were hit by Anti Aircraft shells exploding in the fuselage. The Bomb Aimer Flt/Lt Finley advised the crew to leave by parachute as it was possible the craft could disintegrate. The Pilot Officer R.J. Evans decided to try and get the aircraft back to England, once there they abandoned the craft which was seen to disintegrate in mid air. Both were awarded the DFC. Jack was taken POW and sent to Stalag Luft 1 near Barth on the Baltic Sea for Allied Airmen. The Crew were; Roger John Evans No 410202, enlisted 5.12.1941 age 31 years. Peter Hamiliton Finley No 412294, enlisted 22.6.1941 age 22 years. L.C. Abbott, British/Allied. G.J. Mitchell, POW. Keith Mossman Tranent POW, No 426402, enlisted 20.6.1942 age 19 years 2 months. J.P.T. Finn RAF (Paddy) T.W. Wild British/Allied. On 30.4.1945 The Germans vacated the Camp Jack was in and 2 days later the Russians released them and he was placed in a British Hospital weighing 6 stone. He arrived home in Sept 1945. He stayed in the RAAF No 033130 and served in No 35 Sqd flying VIPs. He was in the Berlin Airlift 1948 - 1949, he also went on exchange with the RAF and flew in No's 24 & 511 Sqd's one a transport the other VIP transport. He was discharged from the RAAF with the rank of Flt/Lt on 6.7.1956 in No 11 Sqd. "Maunder and Sheean". In the article Jacks says that Lofty Maunder always had a joke etc when near the target to settle everyone down. The crew of Halifax LV875 were shot down by a Night Fighter near the target "Terngier" north of Paris 0n 11.4.1944. There was 157 Halifax's on the raid with 10 being lost. The Crew were; John Henry Maunder No 412562, Navigator, enlisted 19.7.1941 age 19 years 10 months. Brian Leo Sheean, No 409855, Wireless Operator, enlisted 1.10.1941 age 18 years. Research shows there were at least 3 more of the Crew KIA. Cecil John Bond No 420433, Pilot, enlisted 8.11.1941 age 19 years 11 months. John Neville Keys No 426112, Bomb Aimer, enlisted 23.5.1942 age 19 years 6 months. Clifford Young Warren No 427047, Rear Gunner, enlisted 26.4.1942 age 19 years 3 months. J.A. A 62 page book outlining the loss of the Beaufort Bomber and the search to locate it. The book includes maps, illustrations and a bibliography. The cover features a map of the search area for the bomber.This book tracks the crash of the RAAF Beaufort, A9-228 which crashed in the mountains near Eskdale, Victoria and the search to locate the wreckage. On the night of 4 June 1945, just weeks before the end of World War 1, a Beaufort Bomber went missing whilst conducting a navigational exercise between Mount Gambier in South Australia and Sale in Victoria.The aircraft was meant to head east, but instead it headed north east due to a series of navigational errors. It flew over Albury, circled and then headed towards the Victorian Alps. It flew over the town of Eskdale in Northeast Victoria and crashed into the side of Mount Tawonga. All crew on board perished. Those lost were Flight Officer Don Flavel (pilot), Flight Officer Robert Clayton (navigator), Flight Officer Fred Wallis and Flight Sergeant L. J. Sims (radio operator). At the time of the crash, many members of the Eskdale community were in the public hall just beginning to watch a screening of the Bing Crosby movie, "Going My Way".
