Port of Echuca
Black and white photograph, Approx. 1960
This is a photograph of the railway station building taken in the early 1900. The building was built in the 1860s. The southern section has a two-storey wing which wasn't part of the original building and canopies over the front upper storey Windows. The railway line was built from Bendigo to Echuca in 1862. Refer pages 63-65, 113-114, 127-8,of Susan Priestley's book. "Echuca; A Centenary History." The Building of the Echuca Railway station was very significant to life in Echuca. It made travel easier for residents, but also it helped develop Echuca as the largest inland port in the world. Traders brought wool and wheat down the Murray-Darling river basin to Echuca where it could then be sent by rail to Melbourne for shipping overseas, or to other ports around Australia. Rail became a very successful partnership in making Echuca Port's busiest year in 1872.A black and white photograph of the Echuca Railway station building taken facing south west at the enterance to the station. In the photograph there is a high corrugated painted fence with a gate, around the northern two-storey part of the building. Beyond the fence it looks like there is a garden and possibly a residence. Copy of an original taken circa 1910On reverse in pencil:"Echuca Railway Station"railways, priestley, susan, echuca railway station. -
Port of Echuca
Coloured post card, Early 20th Century
This postcard shows the extent of the Echuca Railway station in the early 20th Century. There are two large loco sheds across the line from the station. There is a large crowd of people waiting to board the train. There are three men on top of the footbridge and a man is walking down the track on the station side of the line. It is believed to be taken c. 1930.This postcard is significant as it shows the extent of the importance of Rail travel in the early 20th Century. The Railway station itself was well developed and well used. The large crowd on the station indicates the importance of rail travel as road travel for people would still have been difficult at that time. The Railway line from Bendigo to Echuca was built in 1864 to allow goods arriving at the Echuca Wharf to be sent to Melbourne for distribution to world markets.A coloured postcard of The Echuca Railway station, looking south, with footbridge in Centre.Written on the front are the words Echuca, Railway Station. Printed on the back of the card are the words POSTCARD. This space may be used for communication. For address only. Printed in Germany. Fosdyke & Co. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Book, Jill Barnard et al, Welcome and Farewell: The Story of Station Pier, 2004
In the mid-nineteenth century, Victoria’s primitive maritime infrastructure was not coping with the volume of passenger and cargo traffic arriving in and departing from the burgeoning gold-fevered colony. However, the opening of Railway Pier at Port Melbourne in 1854 greatly improved the situation. Railway Pier serviced the steamships, which plied Port Phillip Bay and the Victorian coastal waters beyond, and also offered berths for vessels on the regular runs to other Australian colonies and to overseas destinations. However, as the larger and more powerful steamships of the early twentieth century found berthing increasingly difficult at Railway Pier, the need for a more modern pier became apparent. By 1930, the new Station Pier had replaced its predecessor. Itself extended and upgraded several times including during the past decade, Station pier still offers every contemporary convenience to shipping services using its busy facilities, just as did its predecessor Railway Pier, 150 years ago. The Victorian Government commissioned Welcome & Farewell to celebrate the 150 years since the opening of the Railway Pier. In doing so, it was mindful that the story of the site is not limited to its contribution to national and state economies, or to its physical development. The Government wanted a history that would also speak to ordinary Victorians, and other Australians, of their own experiences of this significant place. For indeed the Station Pier site has played its part in almost every milestone or phase in our history: at moments of celebration and commemoration, during economic booms and depressions, during times of war and peace. It has also won a place in the hearts of ordinary individuals affected by the welcomes and farewells they have experienced there: those for visiting royalty and celebrities, for servicemen and medical personnel off to war or returning home, for migrants from distant countries and refugees from war zones, for friends and family travelling for personal, professional or cultural reasons. Welcome & Farewell thoughtfully examines Station Pier’s significance and offers a splendid visual panorama of the experiences lived out there between 1854 and 2004.Illustrated large-format book with 224 pages [36] p. of plates. : ill., maps, ports.Bibliography: p. 199-201non-fictionIn the mid-nineteenth century, Victoria’s primitive maritime infrastructure was not coping with the volume of passenger and cargo traffic arriving in and departing from the burgeoning gold-fevered colony.
