Cranston in recognition of her services to the Port Phillip District Branch of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows (MUIOOF). In addition to the photograph of the recipient, six other photographs of officers of the lodge are included. The imagery of the certificate references western art and Christian symbolism, as well as obligatory references to labour and learning. The MUIOOF Lodge was located in Union Street, Kew. The Lodge was established in 1863. It was demolished in the early 1990s.The Lodge Board lists the names of representatives of many of Kew's pioneering families. The Board was donated to the Society when the Hall was demolished. Thomas Ham was a cartographer, engraver, lithographer and publisher in Victoria and Queensland. He compiled and printed several editions of his squatting map, beginning with A map of Australia Felix in 1847 and changing its title to Ham's squatting map of Victoria in 1851. The 1851 edition was accompanied by a key listing the names of all the squatters within squatting districts and counties. Later editions show the existing counties, but some areas of Gippsland and the Australian Alps are still described as 'unsurveyed country'. The Port Phillip Gazette was the second newspaper published in Melbourne, in the then Port Phillip district, now Victoria. In 1948 it was published bi-weekly.The map shows the original names of squatters along the Kiewa River. The names of the district are mostly current today although some are spelt differently.2 copies - 1 laminated & 1 paper of the map of "Squatting Runs of the Murray District 1848." The area is recorded (eg. Tawanga, Dederang, Gundowring, Kergunia, Merrimarenbung all along the Kiewa River) under which the names of the squatter is recorded, the number of acres and the licence number. Some Irish immigrants came from Galway, Ireland. Among them were Patrick Kennedy and Dennis Kinnane who emigrated as Bounty passengers on the Himalaya, arriving in the Port Phillip District in February 1842. Although Heidelberg was one of the first parts of the Port Phillip District to be settled, and became important and prestigious in the early years of the colony, its history has been largely neglected. The beauty and fertility of the land and its proximity to Melbourne quickly resulted in the establishment in the 1830s and 40s of large estates by wealthy gentlemen. A romantic spot, Heidelberg became popular with picnickers and later attracted an artists' colony. The character of the area then gradually changed as a distinct village community emerged, and market gardens began to flourish. Unlike some of the suburbs closer to Melbourne, Heidelberg eventually wilted under economic pressures from which it did not fully recover until the turn of the century. (Ms) Berres Hoddle Colville is a local Surrey Hills resident and is a descendant of Robert Hoddle. Robert Hoddle was the first Surveyor General of Victoria. He arrived in Australia in 1823 and was one of the very earliest surveyors to explore, measure and map large areas of this vast, varied and difficult countryside, in a burgeoning era of pastoral settlement. 1837 saw him appointed Surveyor in Charge of the Port Phillip District. This book is based firmly on substantial extracts from Hoddle's own diary and other writings.
