Postcard shows small oval shaped photograph of Collins St framed by a green drawing of timber posts with a kookaburra and magpie on top. The photo shows cable trams and many pedestrians in Collins St. This message is time critical as this soldier is likely off to the European war and writing to his wife, sweet-heart or sister. Before the telephone, postcards were often used to send brief personal or business messages to others in Melbourne or further afield. There were eleven postal deliveries each week (two on weekdays, one on Saturdays) and postcards were cheaper than telegrams. The troopship HMAT Ballarat mentioned in the text departed Melbourne for Port Suez on 18/2/16 and Plymouth on 19/2/17, so the postcard author was likely on one of these two departures. As the Ballarat approached Plymouth with 1150 troops on board, it was sunk by a German U-boat on 25/4/17 yet everyone survived.Yields information about Collins St, The Block and the use of postcards for short messages.Partially coloured postcard with title on front and detailed personal message but no delivery address or stamp on rear.On front 'Collins Street Melbourne'. This is one letter in a series of eighteen letters written by various seafarers to Lillie Duncan. Lillie was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild and, as a Guild member, was strongly involved with the social activities and events organised to entertain visiting seafarers. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was an integral arm of the fundraising that enabled the building of the Mission to Seafarers. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. This is part of a collection donated by Mrs Margaret McKenzie that belonged to her husband and was issued to him during the Second World War, the mess tins were marked with names of places, ships and battle locations. Other items include a postcard sent home in August 1941 and a photo of Australian troops on parade at Wewak in August 1945Aluminium Mess tin set, 2 rectangular tins one smaller to fit into larger. Inscriptions engraved on 4 sides containing locations of training, ships and battle areas. Additional markings include year of manufacture and company along with Department of Defence broad arrow.
