The Portland Pier was extended in 1916: "The contractors for the extension or the deep-water pier continue to make steady progress, and the work is nearing completion. Only a small gap on the south end remains to be filled with piling. The beams and decking have been laid down over the whole of the rest of the pier, and the effect im presses one with the magnitude, stability and excellence of the work."
