Ithacan Historical SocietyPhotograph, Portside at Kioni, Ithaca, c1930s
... Portside at Kioni, Ithaca...There are four two storey houses in the middle distance with a hillside in the background. Portside at Kioni, Ithaca Photograph ...Kioni is a small fishing village on Ithaca where caïque boats were used by fishermen and were once an important form of transport for goods and for people prior. The people in the photograph appear to be lined up along the water's edge awaiting a boat to arrive.A caïque (or kaiki) is a traditional handmade wooden fishing boat found among the waters of the Ionian or Aegean Sea and were once the main form of transport for the many Greek islands, moving people and goods across Greece's archipelago. In the 1980s and 1990s many were destroyed as a result of a European Union decision to subsidize fishermen to scrap their boats to tackle overfishing. Hundreds of beautiful and perfectly sound vessels ended up in landfills resulting in the loss of an integral part of Greece's long seafaring tradition and heritage. Sadly Cyclone Ianos which struck the island in September 2020 destroyed many of the remaining caiques on the island.A sepia photograph, which has a partial white border. The image has been affected by light across the bottom LH corner. The visible section shows a group of people lined up along the side of a wharf like structure. There are four two storey houses in the middle distance with a hillside in the background. -

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageEquipment - Navigation Lamp, W. T George and Co. Ltd, ca 1941
... ...portside...Lamp; Portside ship's lamp is rounded in the front with two flat sides coming to a point at the rear. ...From the late 1840s colours were standardised; red for portside of the vessel and green for starboard, a white masthead light, and a white light at anchor. ...William Thomas George was born in Birmingham in 1884 and was a tin plate worker. He and his wife Ellene had a son Leslie Thomas George. The firm W T George & Co was formed sometime later. In 1939 his firm produced ship lamps. The Patent Number GB546575 on the lamp's plate was assigned to Leslie Thomas George in 1941 for improvements in, or relating to, ships' lanterns. From that time the patent number was affixed to their namufactured Meteorite lights. The ship navigation lamp is important as an example of the evolution of marine safety technology. Countries began passing laws and regulations in the 1830s that required ships to show navigation lights at night or in poor weather. From the late 1840s colours were standardised; red for portside of the vessel and green for starboard, a white masthead light, and a white light at anchor. By 1914 the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was formed and continues, with decisions and notifications on improvements and changes.. Lamp; Portside ship's lamp is rounded in the front with two flat sides coming to a point at the rear. Glass has circular ridging. Metal handle with lid and clasp. The reflector has red colouring. Inscribed on fixed plates on the front, with maker's details and Patent number. This Meteorite lantern was made by W T George and Co Ltd, of Birmingham. Metal Kerosene lamp with two flat sides and a curved, rippled red glass front window. ...This item appears to be a 20th-century lamp, modelled after an earlier version of a wall-mounted kerosene lamp. Authentic kerosene lamps were typically crafted from copper or brass, renowned for their durability and traditional aesthetic. In contrast, contemporary reproductions are often manufactured using alternative materials and processes, reflecting changes in production methods and cost considerations. The lamp is modelled after marine kerosene navigation lamps that were widely used throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. These lamps played a significant role in maritime history, providing essential lighting for navigation on vessels during this era. As a representation of this period’s maritime lighting technology, the lamp serves as an example of the type of equipment that would have been commonplace aboard ships of the time. Marine lamp: navigation lamp, portside. Metal Kerosene lamp with two flat sides and a curved, rippled red glass front window. The name "port" is inscribed on a fixed brass plaque. They presented the box to Cochrane who was responsible for the Mess as a token of appreciation. ...A gift to Ron Cochrane, a member of the Navy commissioning team of HMAS Voyager. The box was handmade by two brothers CLARK/E (?) from Benalla. The signatures done in ball point pen belonged to the crew attached to the portside Forward Mess. They presented the box to Cochrane who was responsible for the Mess as a token of appreciation. Ron Cochrane R46195 served as a Leading Hand with the Royal Australian Navy between 1951 and 1957 and served on numerous ships including HMAS Voyager between 6/2 - 6/10/1957. He was born on 20/3/1933 at Ballarat East. Daring class destroyer, Voyager, was the first ship of her class to enter Australian service, and the first all-welded ship to be built in Australia. During the night of 10 February 1964, Voyager and the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne collided off Jervis Bay, when the destroyer passed in front of the carrier during post-refit sea trials. Voyager was cut in two by the collision, sinking with the loss of 82 of the 314 people aboard. This was the largest loss of Australian military personnel in peacetime, and the subsequent investigations resulted in the holding of two Royal Commissions—the only time in Australian history this has occurred.Cream painted wooden box with metal hinges. There is an inscription and ship on the lid and autographs written in ink on the underside of the lid. On top of lid - HMAS Voyager 1957 On bottom: Bills, bills and more bills !!!!!!
