For the First Peoples of south-eastern Australia, making possum skin cloaks has long been a culturally important practice. But during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, possums and other native animals were also heavily hunted by white colonists who coveted their warm and fashionable furs. This rug, made from fifteen possum pelts, was used in a Brighton home during cold winter months in the 1920s.Possum skin rug made from 15 rectangular cut pelts mounted onto a brown wool felt with cut scalloped edges. possum skin, rug, fur, 1920s

A washboard is designed for hand washing clothing soaked in hot, soapy water in a wash tub or sink. The fabric is squeezed and rubbed against the ridged surface of the washboard to force the cleaning fluid through the cloth to carry away dirt. With the invention of mechanised cleaning, which became more common with washing machines by the end of the 20th century, the washboard became redundant. The traditional washboard is constructed with a rectangular wooden frame around a series of ridges or corrugations; for 19th-century washboards, the ridges were often of wood, sometimes glass, and by the 20th century, ridges of metal became common. In 1833, Stephen Rust obtained a United States patent for the first "fluted" metal washboard. Zinc washboards were predominantly manufactured in the United States from the middle of the 19th century. The washboard is a significant item used for cleaning clothes. It is the forerunner of labour-saving mechanical and electrical laundry equipment. It is still in use today in many countries and helps to understand the domestic life in the 19th and early 20th centuries.Washboard: a wooden frame with two legs, around a ribbed clear glass panel. David Robson has had a lifelong association with aircraft. He started flying at the age of 16 and served for 21 years in the RAAF as a fighter pilot, test pilot and forward air controller (including a tour in Vietnam in the 0-2A). His hobby is painting, and he naturally turns to his own experiences and visual images to convey the wonders and beauty of flight, the camaraderie of the Services and ugliness of war.Original watercolour of USAF Cessna 0-2A supporting A/An Army Bell Helicopter in 1969 in Phuoc Tuy Province. A volume of 114 pages including 4 pages of coloured plates, maps and Illustrations by Katrina Sandiford. It was aimed at secondary students studying the geography of Alpine regions.non-fictionThe Mountain Pygmy possum or Burramys was known only from fossils until 1966, when the first living specimen was found hiding among fire wood at the University Ski Lodge on Mt Higginbotham, Victoria. The story of this species is a case study in conservation and ecology. Coming back from extinction, this tiny species is the only mammal restricted to the Australian Alps. It is found in Kosciusko National Park (NSW), and between Mt Bogong, Mt Higginbotham and at Mt Buller in Victoria. After years of patient research, the authors describe in this book everything that is known about the Burramys, from its physiology, mating habits and behaviour to how we can best manage and protect its habitat from human activities in the ski fields.environment victoria, australian endangered species, mountain pygmy possum
