Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection. The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes. The subdivision advertised as the Golf View Estate in Camberwell included 32 allotments bordering on Glen Iris Road, Smith Street (now Smith Road), St Andries Street and Camberwell Road. In the post-war period in which the subdivision took place, the significance of Camberwell as the ‘Heathiest of Suburbs’ because of the undulating nature of its terrain and its high altitude was promoted. The sales pitch aimed at attracting and selling to ‘Gentlemen’ who could take advantage of the nearby trams, which would take them to the ‘heart of the city’.subdivision plans - camberwell, golf view estate

Pattern 37 replaced the 1908 Pattern and 1925 Pattern—on which it was based—and was standard issue for British and Commonwealth troops from its introduction in 1937, throughout World War II, and in the post-war period until it was superseded by 58 pattern webbingKhaki webbing army infantry belt with brass clip buckle and brassretainers, also has rear brass buckles for attatchment of webbing straps for "basic pouches"

While barber shops were the commercial premises where men and boys had their hair cut, the number of hair clippers in the Kew Historical Society's collection would indicate that frequently hair clipping was carried out in homes in the pre and post war period. Manual hair clippers were readily available for purchase. Mr. Quist, a qualified coffee roaster, was brought out to Australia from Denmark in 1938 due to a growing need to service the coffee demands of an increasing European migrant community.  This bookmark dates to ca. 1950 and was a popular form of advertising in the post war period. This family business remains one of Melbourne's cultural icons still roasting, packaging and serving coffee from Collins St in the twenty-first century. Quist's have been a Melbourne institution for almost ninety years and this bookmark is a testimony to a popular business and a popular form of advertising in the 1950s and 60s. The business is a significant cultural institution of three generations testifying too to the value of immigration.bookmark, coffee, melbourne, quist, denmark

Lucelle Hats advertised itself from the late 1940s to the 1960s as a high-class millinery business situated at 80 Castlereigh Street, Sydney. The style of the hat conforms to the generally smaller and flatter styles promoted as fashionable in 1950s periodicals. Interestingly velvet and felt hats were by the mid-1950s being advertised as suited to mature women. As the wearing of hats became more infrequent in the post-war period, this was the demographic that remained committed to wearing hats. The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women. There are however a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Woman’s half hat constructed of bands of olive green and darker green felt ending with a loose bow at the rear.Label: Lucelle Hats. 80 Castlereagh St. Sydney. This badge is possibly the earliest example of the membership badge of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. The simple discreet design compared to later versions by Stoke suggest it was possibly made in the early post-war 1920s period when resources would have been limited.Earliest known example in the MTSV Collection of an LHLG badgeOval dark blue enamel badge with "LHLG" in large writing at the bottom and "LADIES HARBOUR LIGHTS GUILD" in smaller font running across the top. Victoria once had well over one hundred fire lookouts and firetowers. Fire lookouts, or observation posts, were often just a clearing on a hill or a vantage point, whereas firetowers were definite structures. Many were established by the Forests Commission Victoria (FCV) in the 1920s, but the network was expanded rapidly in response to recommendations of the Stretton Royal Commission after the 1939 Black Friday bushfires. When a fire or smoke was spotted from the tower a bearing was taken with the alidade and radioed or telephoned into the district office. It was then cross referenced with bearings from other towers on a large wall map to give a "fix" on the fire location Alidades and telescopes were used in the post war period but were replaced with a much simpler map table and reference string suspended from the centre of the tower cabin.Uncommon usageTelescope used in fire towers Ex military Kern Company NY Argus made in USA Adjustment lens, dials and focus ring Small spirit levelbushfire, forests commission victoria (fcv)

This photograph captures a historically significant streetscape in Westmeadows, formerly known as Broadmeadows Township, looking north from Fawkner Street. The image features a dirt road with a vintage automobile parked along its path, flanked by trees and modest residential buildings in the background. A tall utility or signpost stands prominently, indicative of early infrastructure in the area. The scene reflects the semi-rural character of Westmeadows prior to its suburban expansion in the post-war period. The presence of unsealed roads and early 20th-century vehicles suggests a time when the township served as a quiet residential and agricultural community, before the development of the Broadmeadows Housing Commission estate in the late 1940s. Historically, Westmeadows was a key waypoint along the Old Sydney Road, and its built environment—including bluestone bridges and early civic buildings—offers insight into Melbourne’s colonial and interwar development. This photograph contributes to the visual documentation of the City of Hume’s transformation from rural township to suburban district. This photograph holds historical and cultural significance as a visual record of Westmeadows, a township in Melbourne’s north-west, during the early 20th century. Captured from Fawkner Street looking north, the image depicts a dirt road flanked by modest residential buildings and mature trees, with a vintage automobile parked in the foreground. The presence of a tall utility or signpost adds to the authenticity of the streetscape. The image is emblematic of Westmeadows’ semi-rural character prior to its suburban transformation in the post-war era. It reflects the township’s role as a quiet residential and agricultural community, shaped by its proximity to the Old Sydney Road and its historical function as a waypoint for travelers. The architectural style and infrastructure visible in the photograph provide insight into the urban morphology and transport conditions of the time. As a primary source, the photograph contributes to the documentation of Melbourne’s suburban expansion, offering valuable context for researchers, historians, and urban planners studying the evolution of the City of Hume. It is significant for its ability to convey the lived experience, landscape, and development patterns of a community in transition.Sepia tone photo. Two cars on road. Trees, some buildings behind.
