Fredrick Charles Dix enlisted 8th July 1915 at Castlemaine (at the time he was living with his Mother and stepfather in Fryers Town) after serving in the Senior Cadets. He was taken on by the 9th Light horse and sent to Egypt for further training. Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 11 January 1916.He served in France and was wounded by shrapnel in the eye socket but eventually returned to active duty on the front.He returned to Australia 6 September 1919 Sgt. Their names are transcribed in pencil on the reverse side of the postcard. Each soldier is dressed in a formal military uniform. It is believed that these soldiers were part of The Australian Imperial Force during World War I. This can be inferred by the chevron rank insignia visible on the uniforms of nine of ten men. The placement of this insignia on the sleeves of their right arms suggests that they were either Warrant Officers or Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO). Specifically, the number of chevron stripes - here, nine men have three - are believed to signify a Corporal rank. The main role of the Signal Companies during World War I was the laying and maintenance of telephone cables and switchboards, used to connect various units in their area. Furthermore, the man standing in the back row, third from the left side, has an Overseas Service chevron patch on his coat. In January 1918, the Australian Imperial Force approved the wearing of the overseas service chevrons which had been adopted by the British Army. These were embroidered or woven inverted chevrons worn above the cuff on the right arm. Due to a shortage of supply, some men had chevrons privately made. John Lachlan McIntyre was born at Beeac, Victoria in December 1890. He enlisted in the 1st AIF in July 1915. John fought on the Western Front, taking part in the battles of Fromelles and the 2nd Battle of the Somme. He was severely wounded at Fromelles and spent 12 months in hospital in England before returning to the front. John returned home in 1919 and was granted a soldier settlement block in Lara in 1937. He was a founding member of Lara RSL and is its longest serving member. John died in 1990. This letter was written by John and sent to his mother in 1918 on his journey through Belgium. The McIntyre family were early pioneers in the Lara district, and the brothers were founding members of the Lara RSL. According to his military records, William Collier did not make it to France. After enlisting on 3/04/1915 he went to England. William Thomas Jarrot was a former teacher at Wangaratta high School, who went missing in active service on 7th June 1917. The William family preserved this letter, unopened and unread for exactly 100 years. Written by Jarrot to his sister from the battlefront of Belgium, it was opened and read by the Wangaratta High School Prefect team on the 7th of June 2017.Wooden Australia-shaped frame around an embroidered postcard reading 'Sonoenic de France'.
