Mr Perkins joined the police force in his early twenties and apart from an 18-month posting in Melbourne, spent the rest of his career serving communities in country Victoria. He was a keen fisherman and hunter- his first love was sitting on the banks of the Murray River with a fishing rod in his hand. Family camping trips were spent by the river where everyone slept on stretchers with several army blankets underneath and a wheat bag wagga on top. The green colour of this wagga is from "Dekkol" a preservative which Mr Perkins used to protect his cotton fishing nets from rotting.Quilt made of two standard size jute wheat bags (a bushel = 150lbs) split and hand bound along seams.It is an example of the basic type of wagga made by shearers, farmers or swagmen. Homemade bread for the family was stored in these type of large bins to keep them fresh. As there were no preservatives in those days, the bread would not last long before it went stale or mouldy. A vintage extra large cream coloured enamel bread bid with a lid and two handles on the side. It has white enamel inside the lid. This thermometer came from the Orr family at Addington. Archibald Orr, father and son, were butchers as well as farmers. Dross Drossou established a cordial factory in Orbost in the 1930s. He sold his cordial manufacturing business to Phillips and Stone, a Bairnsdale company, in 1948. Glass bottles were refillable until the 1960s, creating a demand for their collection and onsale back to beverage manufacturers via ‘bottle merchants’. A deposit on the bottles was added to all sales as they left the factory. The returned bottles were washed and the old label removed. The inside was cleaned by pushing the bottle onto a revolving brush. The reusing of the bottles went on until the bottle was broken or the top became chipped. Phillips & stone operated a cordial factory in Orbost. Three Cohn brothers, Jacob, Julius and Moritz came to Bendigo from Denmark in 1852. They were followed by their brother Solomon (Henry) in 1858. Jacob (1830-1911) married Rosa Levy in 1858 during a return trip to Denmark. Moritz (1822-1878) married Roschen Ballin in Germany in 1861. Julius (1828-1877) married Rosetta Spyer in Victoria in 1866. Henry (1826-1874) was married to Leah Fonseca.. Jacob, Moritz and Julius began the Victoria Brewery in Bridge Street in 1858, whilst Henry was described as a traveller and collector for Cohn Bros. in 1859. The brothers soon expanded into the making of cordials (soft drinks). In 1866 Henry took up a hotel in Sandridge (Port Melbourne). Ralph Reeves purchased an established cordial factory in the early 1900’s from the estate of J Fletcher. It was operated by the Reeves family, firstly Reginald, followed by his son-in-law Murray Moon until the latter part of the 20th century. A common object familiar to a large number of people in the Warrnambool area with links to one of Warrnambool’s longest established family businesses.Two clear glass bottles with rib pattern and circles at bottom of neck.
