The commemorative programme for the 'Song of Survival concert' held by the Red Cross at the Perth Concert Hall on the 22nd August, 1990. The concert was to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the release of Australian Army Nurses from a prison camp in Sumatra. Along with the programme for the evening, it also includes historical information and information on all those involved. In the prison camp in Sumatra a vocal orchestra was formed amongst the women, they sang together for over a year amidst the death and despair and filth of the camp, providing hope and some joy in such a terrible place. This concert was organised in their honour and to aid the Red Cross. 74 singers were trained to recreate the Vocal Orchestra of Sumatra. Staple-bound booklet on white paper. The cover is covered in sheet music and the title and event details are printed over the top in black ink. Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 enlisted in the 2/nd AIF on 30.5.1940 age 18 years (put his age up to 21) in 2/2 Pioneer Battalion AIF, embarked for the Middle East 8.4.1941, promoted L/Cpl 25.6.1941, promoted Cpl 29.10.1941, took part in the Syrian Campaign. On 31.1.1942 the unit embarked for Australian but were diverted to Java to defend it, disembarked 18.2.1942. Java surrendered and they were taken POW, reported MIA on 30.4.1942 then after as POW. As a POW he worked on the Burma Railway. In December 1944 they were on the Hell Ship AWA Maru and sailed for Japan to work in the Coal Mines arriving mid Jan 1945. He was repatriated back to Australia on the HMS Formidable, discharged on 28.11.1945 with the rank of Cpl. The spoon was given to Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 2/2 Pioneer BN by an American POW. He carried the spoon tied to the side of his loin cloth. Max worked on the Burma Railway and in the Coal Mines in Japan, Senryu 24 and Fukuoka camps. After the war he could not sit on a chair for a long time and would just squat on the floor with his back to the wall as he had done as a POW. This photograph, taken by The Advocate, shows Ron Edwards, President of the Sunshine RSL, holding a memorial dedicated to Walter “Wally” Peeler, Victoria Cross recipient and former Sunshine Harvester Factory worker, and local resident.Walter “Wally” Peeler (1887–1968) was a Victorian soldier and one of Australia’s most highly decorated servicemen. Born at Barkers Creek near Castlemaine, he worked locally before enlisting in the First World War in 1916. Serving with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, he earned the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery at Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917, where he led assaults on multiple German machine‑gun posts. After the war, Peeler returned to Victoria and later worked at Sunshine Harvester Works, linking him directly to the industrial heritage of Melbourne’s western suburbs. He re‑enlisted during the Second World War, served in the Middle East and Java, and endured years as a prisoner of war under Japanese captivity. From 1934 to 1964, Peeler served as a long‑standing Custodian of the Shrine of Remembrance, becoming a familiar figure in Victoria’s commemorative life. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. The Shire of Marong Council minutes from 24th July, 1919 noting that Mr Arnall and Mr Jackson offered to pay for two honour roll books and several councilors also raised the idea of a marble wall tablet as a commemorative stone and a glass bookcase for the honour rolls being purchased. It represented the 'fulfilment of a proposal (for the memorial) raised in 1992 by Matron Vivian Statham on behalf of her colleagues of the Australian Army Nursing Service.'
