Most constant of all In this respect have been Messrs D. Ronaldson and J. H. Davey, and Mrs W. D. Thompson, president, and Miss , Bell, secretary, of the Welcome Home Com mittee. A body has been organised to "control the work, as parties of soldiers. are returning with greater frequency. The photograph was most likely taken upon the return of Harry Holmes of Ascot around 24 June 1919. The Ballarat Courier of 25 June 1919 reported: "ASCOT RETURN OF SOLDIERS. Four more returned soldiers from this district arrived home this week, and word motored out from Ballarat on arrival of the train on Mondayevening last. They were Lance-Corporal H. Holmes, Driver Frank Thomas, Driver S. G. Spittle, and Driver Leslie Walter, the last named hailing from Coghill’s Creek. They were all members of the A.A.S.C., and have been on active service since 1915, and up to the signing of the armistice, which occurred while they were in France. They took part in the big. operations at Villers-Bretonneux, and also at Mont St. Quentin, and spent the terrible winter of 1916 on the Somme. City of Glen Eira is conducting a project for WW1 Centenary involving significant Street...Quentin Bryce during the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show, held at Point Cook on March1st & 2nd. City of Glen Eira is conducting a project for WW1 Centenary involving significant Street ...The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Jim Dale continued to produce the Newsletter in 2013 after Helen resigned. 3 x A4 paper pages printed on one side with colour photographs, Jim Dale, President, welcomes members to the April 27th Meeting at Box Cottage. There were many visitors on the February Open Day including Jeff Marriot. In March some guests from a Wedding at the Rotunda in Joyce Park visited. Chris and Judy Hawker, relatives of early aviator Harry Hawker were presented to Her Excellency, the Governor General of Australia, Quentin Bryce during the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show, held at Point Cook on March1st & 2nd. Jim representing CMHS attended this memorable occasion. Jim also attended Moorabbin Primary School March 3rd where he told the pupils about Harry Hawker. March 22nd Jim, Valma and Anne attended the Moorabbin Primary School Fete handing out leaflets and talking about Box Cottage Museum. City of Glen Eira is conducting a project for WW1 Centenary involving significant Street names in the area eg Monash, Chauvel, Birdwood etc. Jim has compiled a story about Thomas Calcutt 1809 - 45, a shepherd who emigrated from Oxford, England to Brighton Victoria 1842. He was part of the Henry Dendy 's assignment of settlers. Thomas obtained employment with Public Works and lived in Brighton with his family. Sadly he died during the 6km walk home from his work in St Kilda to Brighton 1845. After a 2 day search his body was found. He is the only winner of the V.C. in north east Victoria, beyond Euroa. Lowerson's name has been memorialized in a street ...The portrait depicts Sgt. A.D. Lowerson V.C. after receipt of his award at Buckingham Palace on March 1, 1919. It links the town and the Lowerson family to events in World War 1. A.D. Lowerson was awarded the Victoria Cross as the result of bravery and leadership in the capture of Mont St. Quentin on September 1, 1918, particularly for his bombing of a German strongpoint. Despite this Sapper FARFORD [sic], with very conspicuous coolness patrolled the lines from end to end repairing one break after another. It is a day-to-day account of a soldier's experience going to fight in World War 1, 1914-1919. Robert Thomas Garford (SERN 1138) was born in Fitzroy in 1892. He was aged 23 and living in Camberwell when he enlisted on 14 September 1914. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. He was a sapper with the 2nd Divisional Signal Company. He was awarded a Military Medal: 'At CLERY, near MT.ST. QUENTIN, on the 31st of August 1918, this soldier was engaged as a linesman at the Brigade Forward Station. Throughout the day forward lines were repeatedly broken by enemy shell fire. Despite this Sapper FARFORD [sic], with very conspicuous coolness patrolled the lines from end to end repairing one break after another.
