These photographs are of Lake Kerferd and the Pavilion. There are no people in the first image but in the second image there are a man and women sitting on the railing of the pavilion. The Pavilion sits in a picnic ground and there are a few trees around it. Lake Kerferd is significant to Beechworth and the surrounding area because it was the main source of water for the community. In addition, it is also significant because this photograph indicates that it was a popular picnic spot during the beginning of the twentieth century. These records were written to record the names of the students of the Ballarat School of Mines who attained their certificates in the areas of their study.It covers the years between 1916 and 1945.A cardboard foolscap folder containing lined and ruled pages containing the handwritten names and awards of the students of the Ballarat School of Mines and some from the Ballarat Junior Technical School, receiving certificates from the Victorian Education Department commencing in 1916 and finishing in 1945. Each year The Australian Insitutue of Mining Engineers held a meeting in an important mining district or township. In 1906, via the good offices of David Ham an invitation was extended to the Ballarat students to take part in a trip to Broken Hill, via Wallaroo and Moonta, and Port Pirie. They left the Ballarat station on Saturday May 19, 1906 aboard the Adelaide Express. The Ballarat party consisted of David Ham (Ballarat School of Mines Council Member); staff members Frederick J. Martell, A.D. Gilchrist, John Sutherland, A.E.C. Kerr, A. Garard and E.J. McConnon. The attending students were W.P. Avery, M. Boyer, M.H. Bade, E. Booth, E. Crossly, A. Cooper, G.H. Davenport, W.E. Figgis, R. Galloway, C. Hesselmann, H. Hawkesworth, M. McCallum, H.F. Owen, W. Pearce, W. Sayer, J. Sutherand, Arthur E. Tandy and H.C. Valentine. Students were also present from the Working Men's College (later RMIT), Bairnsdale School of Mines, Melbourne University and the Bendigo School of Mines. The postcard shows how the Mission to Seafarers, then known as the Seamens Institute, looked early in its operation - probably circa 1920. It also documents the types of activities were offered to visitors, and how the visitors used the facilities.The postcard records the fittings and furnishings of the Mission to Seafarers, then known as the Seamens' Institute: tables, chairs but also the paintings which were often donated. The largest one on the main wall above the stage is "Start Point Light, Devonshire" (see item 0230), painted and donated by Miss Madeline R. Lewellin (1854-1944) in 1918.
