The old Box Hill Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Watts Street. Eight uninformed men standing and sitting on the fire cart and two uniformed men standing beside the horse-drawn cart, in front of the Fire Brigade building (a brick front and weatherboard-sided building). The Box Hill Fire Brigade opened in 1893 and closed on 17 October 1935 at the Watts Street, Box Hill address. The Brigade was relocated to the corner of Whitehorse Road and Linsley Street, Box Hill. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. A. E. Rodwell was a wholesale and retail butcher in Nicholson Street (the main street), Orbost in the early 20th century.This document is a record of an early business in Orbost and reflects a time when accounts were hand-written. It is a useful research tool.Three accounts. One very yellow with block print and illustration of a bull in the top left hand corner. The other two are white with red lines and blue print. Herman Wehner, had learned his trade as a blacksmith and coach builder in Germany before coming to Australia in about 1884. After working for some time in Melbourne and at Wallan he came to Orbost in 1889 and bought John William Borland‟s wheelwright and blacksmithing business in Nicholson Street. At the time there were two blacksmithing and wheelwright businesses in Orbost, the other one, also in Nicholson Street, was owned by Mr John Russell. (ref, John Phillips Newsletter July 2015) Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. The Wehner family is/ was a prominent family in Orbost from the late 19th century. Herman Wehner founded Wehner's Blacksmith's at Orbost in 1889. Oswald Wehner began working in 1910 with his father. In 1947 Ossie's son Tom started blacksmithing, retiring in 1991 and closing the business, The building remains in Nicholson Street. This item is an example of book-keeping in the early 20th century. Lancelot Herbert came to Orbost in 1886, taking up a partnership with local store-owner Massey Coote. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Lancelot took over the store. Lancelot died in 1911. In 1918, following the death of adjacent shop-owner George Temple, the Herbert family purchased that shop. Progressively Herberts Snowy River Stores grew into a department store of several shops along Nicholson St. They also had small shops at Cann River, Noorinbee and Genoa which were run by members of the family, as well as a carrying business and fuel outlets. Lancelot died on 2/6/1911 and his wife Martha [died 1945] are buried in a joint grave in Orbost Cemetery. (info. Noreen and Lindsay Thomson). This 1911 Invoice from Lancelot Herbert of Snowy River Stores is made out to R P Cameron. Mr Cameron was a member of another early family in the Orbost/Snowy River district. John Russell Senior was a blacksmith, wheelwright, farmer and later chairman of the Orbost Butter Factory, makers of Sunny South Butter (today part of Murray Goulburn Co Ltd). His blacksmith business was in Nicholson Street, Orbost. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. This book was owned by F.B. Dicken. Frank and May Dicken moved to Orbost in 1936 where Frank became manager of Pardew Brothers store in Nicholson Street. In 1945, Frank purchased the business and in 1947, formed a partnership with his son, Selwyn. The store was then called F.B. Dicken and Son.
