Dick Richards was a member of the Shackleton Trans Antarctic Expedition Ross Sea Shore Party. He later became Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines. The text for this book was typed by Ballarat School of Mines librarian Heather Durant, who remembered that at times it was difficult to read the writing due to whale blubber oil from the lamps on the paper. Heather was told that Dick Richards only started keeping the diary when ther became a chance the Ross Sea Shore Party may not survive. Heather remembered Dick Richards affectionately - he always carried a pipe and called her 'girlie'.Blue hard covered book of 14 pages. The Old Identities Association was the forerunner ofThe Old Colonists' Association. This particular medal was presented to R.W. Wright who arrived in Ballarat in August 1853. It was purchased by the Old Colonists' Association in 2014. Other known medals were presented to :- * Arthur Croft who arrived in 1852 (Museum of Victoria) * Isaac Croft who arrived in September 1851 (Gold Museum) * Ben Story (Ballarat Historical Society) * John Brokenshire (Private Collection)Ballarat Old Identities medal in a box. Reginald (Reg) WARNOCK (1915-1991) Reginald William Warnock undertook the Commercial Art course during the 1930s. On completion, he worked as a designer at Paton’s Advertising Service, Melbourne. Commercial art subjects between 1915 and 1939 reflected changing practises and industry requirements, with Ballarat graduates in demand. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. R.W. Warnock moved from Ballarat to Moonee Ponds towards the end of March, 1937. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. William H. Corbould was an alumni of the Ballarat School of Mines. He was born in Ballarat, and his father conducted a tailor's business. William was educated at Ballarat College and obtained a Certificate of Assaying and Metallurgy in 1883, and Chemistry in 1884. Three letters between Geoffrey Blainey and Dick Richards (Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines) regarding information on William H. Corbould for a book Geoffrey Blainey was commissioned to write on Mount Isa Mines. Four pages by Geoffrey Blainey are handwritten. One page by Dick Richards is typed. The resulting book "Mines in the Spinifex: The Story of Mount Isa Mines" was published in 1960. The letter includes information on W.H.
