In 1914 he leased a newly-built shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and continued on the business until the late 1930s. ...This bottle was used in the pharmacy of the Warrnambool chemist Francis Bloore. It contained a mixture made up for Archdeacon Thomas Bennett who was the Anglican Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool from 1912 to 1915. As Captain Bennett he was the chaplain of the 22nd Battalion in World War One from 1915 to 1917. He became Archdeacon of Warrnambool in 1917 and held this position until 1937. He spent much time on his return assisting returned World War One soldiers and their kin in the Warrnambool area. He was the first President of the Warrnambool Returned Soldiers League. Francis Bloore, born in Ballarat in 1874, came to Warrnambool about 1912. In 1914 he leased a newly-built shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and continued on the business until the late 1930s. This bottle is of great interest as it is one of the few items we have in our collection associated with the pharmacy business of Francis Bloore. The bottle is also associated with an important Warrnambool Anglican Church identity, Archdeacon Bennett. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a circular moulded top with an opening. It has a cork stopper. The top of the bottle is chipped. The label on the front of the bottle is partly torn away and very stained with most of the handwriting and some of the printing indecipherable. The inside of the bottle is discoloured. ‘The Mixture …. tablespoonful with water every three hours - Archdn Bennett’ ‘Shake the Bottle’ ‘F.W. See image i4 for hi res scan of negative\ Neville Britton of the BTM advised 2/5/2020: Seven LaFrance 100' ladders built by the American LaFrance Company, of Elmira, New York arrived in Australia in 1942 as part of the WW2 lend lease program. One each to Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. Four initially to the MFB but within a short period of time went to the CFA. One each to Geelong City FS, Ballarat City FS and Bendigo FS. The fourth was a stand in and was located at the Ballarat FS when not required. Thus the two ladders in the photo at the Ballarat City FS. I was a volunteer at Ballarat City FB from 1967 and commenced my career employment there in 1970. The two LaFrance ladders were still in Ballarat at that time. In the mid 70's the 'spare' was allocated to the Dandenong FS. They were retired in the 1980's. The four Victorian ladders still survive. Ex Geelong City is at the Fire Services Museum Victoria. They have a second one that was acquired by a private collector. It was neglected and returned to the FSMV in poor condition. Ex Ballarat City was driven to Sydney and remains at the Museum of Fire at Penrith. The fourth one was acquired by a private collector and stored in a shed in North Geelong and never moved. He recently died and it may have been sold. They had a V12 petrol engine with all ignition parts duplicated. So two Distributors, two ignition coils and two spark plugs per cylinder. It is located in the western median strip at the intersection of Sturt and Raglan Streets. Made from Hawksbury stone on a granite base, the sculptor has created a female figure as the centrepiece, with two reliefs figures at the front and rear depicting a miner and a farmer. The work was created in commemoration of Mr Frank Pinkerton, an esteemed local lawyer in Ballarat. George Allen won the commission to design and execute the Pinkerton Statue in open competition in 1949. The statue is a significant work of one of Victoria's leading sculptors of the mid twentieth century, and controversy at the time surrounding its installation reflects the general attitude of the period to progressive public sculpture.Mother Earth was classified as regionally significant by the National Trust in 2003. The statement of significance below ha been provided by the National Trust, Victoria: The Pinkerton Statue by George Allen is of a simplified female figure which symbolises 'Earth', with smaller figures representing Mining and Agriculture carved in bas-relief at its base. The statue is carved in Hawkesbury Freestone and mounted on a granite plinth. It is located in a prominent position in central Ballarat. The statue in commemoration of Mr. Frank Pinkerton, an esteemed local lawyer, erected in Ballarat in 1952 is significant for aesthetic and social reasons at a Regional level. The statue is a significant example of the work of one of Victoria's leading sculptors of the mid twentieth century, and the controversy at the time surrounding its installation reflects the general attitude of the period to progressive public sculptures. George Allen won the commission to design and execute the Pinkerton Statue in open competition in 1949 against a large group of his peers. Following this. Allen was again successful in another major competition to design the National War Memorial for the Forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne in 1951. Allen chose to work in a 'symbolic' manner using simplified forms with little detail, and relying on the strength of composition, 'boldness of statement' and the consideration of material for impact. Because of its lack of realism the Pinkerton Statue engendered much controversy, particularly within the popular press at the time, although it was generally appreciated in artistic circles. Allen had travelled extensively in Europe in the late 1930's, but his work mainly reflected influences from early modem sculptors in the United Kingdom such as Frank Dobson and Eric Gill. The Pinkerton Statue was the first example of modem sculpture to be erected in Ballarat and is an excellent example Allen's own work and the changing artistic culture of the period. Allen himself said that it reflected the "spirit of the time".
