These flooring nails and lock came from a railway cottage at 2 Ethel Lane, Wodonga. One is a diamond-headed timber nail and the others are simple round headed nails. They were designed so the head of the flooring nail when driven into the Baltic pine flooring was covered over by the timber so was not visible. The cottage was built about 1890. It featured many items labelled with the emblem of Victorian Railways. The house was demolished in November 2006. This is one of a number of cottages that were in Horne Street, Sunbury and have been demolished to make way for commercial development. It was built at no.30 at the corner of Horne and Cornish Streets some time in the 1930. Originally it was a house for railway employees working at Sunbury in later years it was a private house. It was demolished in the early 2010s. Grandma Wearmouth used to open and shut the train line gates across the road each time a train came through, day or night. This was her job, so the family moved their house closer to the gates so she could manage better. For years it was known as the Gate House because it was so close to the railway line. Laurie McCabe, a former porter at Wyelangta, a player in the local football team, and married to one of the potato-growing families, was the Station Master becoming the travelling station master and guard in 1930. The Original Station Master's House, Circa 1905, Eltham Auction; Diamond Valley News, March 17, 1992 The advertisement states the house is circa 1905 which is approximately correct. When the railway first came to Eltham in 1902 there was no appointed Stationmaster. The Guard on the train was the general oddsbody who did everything including sell tickets and station master duties. There was some discontent about this situation. It was probaly a few years before a permanent stationmaster was appointed but no reference to that has yet come to light. The house form photos dated in 1983 certainly had the appearance of an Edwardian style (1901-1910). The advertisement also states the house was in the centre of Eltham till 1985 before it was shifted from its original site to 58 Park Road.. The auction date is scheduled for Saturday April 4th - which would have been 1992. Essentially the house was sold in 1986 for $1 to save it from demolition and was then relocated to 58 Park Road. A Bill McGilvray was Stationmaster and lived in the house in the 1960s. A check of the 1968 Electoral Roll (via Ancestry) shows William John McGillivray, Station Master at the Station Residence, Eltham. Also at the same address in 1968, Marjorie Jean McGillivray, home duties, Station Residence, Eltham and Dianne Marjorie McGillivray, teacher, Main Road, Eltham. From the available records digitised, William first appears at the Station Residence in 1963. William and family were still in the residence in 1977 but by 1980 William, still Station Master, was living in Bible Street, so not sure who was in residence if anyone between 1980-1986. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. These positions included Commissioner of Public Works, Vice President of the Board of Land and Works, Postmaster General, Commissioner of Railways and Commissioner of Trade and Customs and Minister of Railways. Importantly, he held these offices during the period of Colonial expansion leading up to the economic crash of the early 1890s. There are 3 tracks; the third track was built in 1971, which gives an approximate date for the photo. At this time the original station buildings were demolished and replaced by buildings constructed from concrete bricks and a second subway replaced the overhead footbridge. According to Roderick Smith, a local railway enthusiast, originally there had been 3 railway houses at the Mont Albert end of the northern car park. These were demolished to extend the car park. Certainly 8 Bedford Avenue, built as the station master's house was demolished at this time. The palm tree had been planted in the station master's front garden and was retained in a small garden bed within the car park. Kew Railway Station was the second railway station on the Kew 'Spur' Line in Melbourne. The key unlocked signals equipment at the Station.
