This badge is a Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) Member Badge The RASV (now known as Melbourne Royal) is the organization responsible for hosting major agricultural events in Victoria, Australia, most notably the annual Melbourne Royal Show. Key Features of the Badge: • The Motto: "Speed the Plough" is the traditional motto of the RASV. It dates back centuries in English agricultural tradition and symbolises a wish for success, good harvest, and progressive innovation in farming. • The Monogram: The stylized interlocking letters in the yellow centre spell out RASV (Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria). • The Crown: The St Edward's Crown sitting at the top signifies the "Royal" status of the society. • The Classification: The scroll at the bottom marks the bearer specifically as a financial Member. • The Cord: The braided brown cord allowed the member to wear the badge securely around their neck while visiting the showgrounds or attending society functions. These metal and enamel badges were issued annually or as multi-year passes to financial members and guests, changing color schemes and design layouts depending on the specific year or decade of issue. They are highly popular collector's items today for those interested in Australian agricultural show memorabilia. The number 3302 stamped or engraved on the back is the individual Membership Number of Mr. Donald Pollard of Wodonga. Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern, Victoria in 1898. His family first arrived in this region during the gold rush era, purchasing a piece of land adjacent to the Murray River. The spectacular scenery and rich history of the area is said to have inspired Busse in his writing. He attended Wesley College in his school days, before going on to study law at the University of Melbourne. After graduating from university, Busse would go on to become a barrister, but he is best known as a writer of fiction, publishing two novels: 'The Blue Beyond: A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia' and 'The Golden Plague: A Romance in the Early Fifties'. Busse died in 1960. This particular object is dated 1895, three years before Busse was born. It can thus be assumed that it was awarded to a relative of his, possibly his father in relation to their land by the Murray River. This object is significant as it is associated with Wilfred Clarence Busse, a celebrated author and barrister who grew up in the locality of Chiltern. It is also a medal awarded by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, a society that has held social and industrial significance since it was founded in the nineteenth century. This postcard appears to have been produced so various judges and stewards could reply directly to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria to accept their positions at the 1915 Show. The 1915 did not go ahead, as the Showgrounds was offered to the Department of Defence for use in response to the First World War. Although staff operations would move to the Melbourne Showgrounds during the Show, for some time, outside of Showtime, the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria's offices were in the CBD on Collins Street. Staff operations became permanently housed at the Showgrounds in 1957.[obverse] WAITING for the JUDGE / MELB "ROYAL" SHOW / [reverse] POST CARD. / MELBOURNE ROYAL SHOW SERIES. / [table] 1913 Show (compared to) Highest / Previously / Entries ... 9,827 8,536 (1912) / Attendance .. 184,637 167, 390 " / Profit on Show .. £7,432 £6,502 " / Prize Money Awarded £4,586 £3,934 " / [end of table] Date,............1915. / I hereby accept the appointment / of Judge (judge has been struck and replaced with Milk Steward in handwriting) in Section............, in / compliance with the request of your council. / Signed.................... / Full postal address................. / RENWICK, PRIDE, NUTTALL. Improving meat production In 1905, the English firm Thomas Borthwick & Son set up operations in Australia. Borthwick was a major meat exporter and ran freezing works as well as having its own cattle stations in Australia. From the early 19th century, Borthwick encouraged the production of quality beef by awarding prizes at agricultural shows throughout Australia. In the early 1950s the Australian Meat Board and The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) also took steps to encourage beef producers. Perpetual Trophy For the Coronation Show in 1953, Borthwick introduced a perpetual trophy. The Borthwick Trophy was awarded to the Fat Cattle Champion with the winner being judged from the best team of three steers under three years old. The winning team was the one that gained the highest aggregate score from both the live and carcase judging. Initially, the relevant winning Breed Society retained the trophy for a year and returned it for the following Royal Melbourne Show but the Borthwick Trophy is now displayed at the Melbourne Royal offices on the Melbourne Showgrounds. (Mandy Bede) The competition is now known as the competition between teams of three purebred steers in the Beef Carcase competition. There can be one team per beef cattle breed in the competition.Large silver cup with three handles, each flat at the top and then curving around the outside of the cup and rejoining before the cup's stem.THE BORTHWICK TROPHY. / PRESENTED TO / THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY OF VICTORIA / BY / THOMAS BORTHWICK & SONS (A/ASIA) LTD, / FOR / ANNUAL COMPETITION BETWEEN TEAMS OF / FAT STEERS, / REPRESETNING BEEF CATTLE BREEDS / AT / THE MELBOURNE ROYAL SHOW / [various winning breeds]cattle, beef carcase, melbourne royal beef carcase competition, beef, perpetual, perpetual trophy, borthwick, prize, blue ribbon competition
