The book is about a wartime field hospital, the 2/9th Australian General Hospital (AGH). It was a portable group of about 300 nurses, doctors and support servicemen. The 2/9th AGH started it's life by heading by sea for the Middle East, where it was to care for ill and injured troops. It operate with a minimum of 600 bed, with 4000 at times of stress. Sister Joan Crouch has collected dairies, correspondence, official records, recollections and photos from people who served with the 2/9th for her book, told chronologically. The book begins with the first passage as a unit, via India, to the Middle East. They established the 2/9th AGH near the Arab village of Amiriya, where sand storms penetrated everything, including the operating theatre, but the staff were able to go sightseeing at the Pyramids. Next they moved to a monastery in Nazareth, where it snowed over Christmas 1941. The 2/9th AGH was recalled after Pearl Harbour to assist in South-East Asia, but Singapore fell so they came back to Northfield, Australia for a few months. They were then moved to a site 30km out of Port Moresby, called Seventeen-Mile. There they bore the brunt of casualties from the Kokoda Trail, with December 1942 seeing them looking after 4000 with a staff of twenty-nine doctors, 112 sisters and about 300 others. The 'walking wounded' were known to help nurse the bedridden. In September 1943 the first group of the Australian Army Medical Womens Service (AAMWS) arrived to assist the 2/9th AGH. March 1944 ended the service of the 2/9th AGH in what is now Papua New Guinea and they briefly returned to Tamworth, Australia, before closing temporarily for a few months. March1945, the 2/9th AGH were sent to assist in the Borneo campaign at Morotai, where they saw out the war. Joan Crouch worked as a nurse with 2/9th AGH, during World War II, continued afterwards in the Army Nursing Service (ANS) and was later involved in the Korean War, working in Japan and Seoul. A partial record of performances by the company includes: 1952 Florodora, 1953 The Cingalee - San Toy or The Emperor's Own, 1954 While the Sun Shines - A Country Girl - Our Miss Gibbs, 1955 The Toreador - The Arcadians, 1956 The Maid of the Mountains - Whiteoaks - Goodnight Vienna!, 1957 A Country Girl. Most of the Company's performances took place in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, Kew. The scrapbook of annotated photographs, programmes, and newspaper reviews of which this item is a part was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Black and white photograph of Lance Nicholls, left, in a performance of Goodnight Vienna! by The Kew Light Opera Company in 1957. Nicholls produced and directed the production as well as performing as Prince Schmettoff. The accompanying programme provides a profile of Nicholls. It states that: Lance Nicholls (Prince Schmettoff), our producer, is a well known personality in the theatre and radio world, having created a reputation as an outstanding character actor through his roles in "Libel", "Streets of London", "Seven Day's Leave", "Village Priest". He was with J.C.W. for many years and a leading player with the late Gregan McMahon, The Roland McCarty Shakespearian Coy., and The Melbourne Little Theatre; also touring with the Council of Adult Education in "Tobias and the Angel" and "The Miser", then in "While the Sun Shines" for the Red Cross. Mr. Nicholls conducted his own Company of players, known as The Modern Theatre, who presented Shakespearian productions to schools and colleges, and has successfully produced many other plays and Musical Comedy. The Kew Light Opera Company has been fortunate in having a producer and player of such high calibre as Mr. Nicholls, and, it has been seen in previous successful shows under his guidance, hopes to go on to further success in the future."Inscribed above the photo in the scrapbook by Marion Tilley: "Lance Nicholls".performing arts -- kew (vic.), scrapbooks, marion tilley collection, kew light opera company, kew recreation hall, musical comedy -- melbourne -- victoria -

This photo shows Matron Dorrie Vines with three residents. Names around the photo L to R: Lee Henneberry, Doreen Devlin, and Betty Henderson. The newspaper article from The Age was published on 28 August 1959 and mentions Miss Vines has worked at Stanhope since 1946 when she returned from war service. She had been a trained nurse and served in Middle East and New Guinea with the RAANC. She had been awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross and was mentioned in despatches. Mention of the routine of the house include that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equipped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member joins them for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year and they have informal dances at Stanhope. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01834. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Generally Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A record of life at Stanhope as reported in the Age Newspaper.Black and white photo of Matron and girls in 1959 along with a newspaper clipping about her.residences, dorothy vines, stanhope
