It was once believed that cutting open the wound, removing the venom by suction and then applying a tourniquet would be the most effective treatment but it has since been proven that this method has little effect, and can cause more damage and harmful infection than the snake venom. This type of treatment was popular in the early 20th century and kits like these would be common in travel bags and household first aid. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the current method of pressure/immobilisation was introduced.Small tubular wooden container with removal ends, end with flat end encloses a metal lancet, end with rounded end contains a black powder. Bottomley ...Dr William Bottomley (1881-1952) was a specialist based at Collins Street who advocated for humanist and practical solutions to public health issues. His love of the Emerald countryside which he visited at weekends with his family led him to being the primary instigator of the late 1920s development - the iconic and beautiful Emerald Country Club. He later retired to Emerald where he built a Modernist-inspired home, Silver Birches, which is of architectural significance. This 1911 booklet outlines his argument for sexually transmitted diseases to be treated as a public health issue instead of the practice at that time which was to blame the victim. This book is significant because it outlines Dr Bottomley's argument for treating sexually transmitted diseases as a public health problem in the early 20th century when this was not a widely held view. Dr Bottomley also has close connections with the origin of the Emerald Country Club.Booklet with dark red paper cover. 30 pages. On front cover: 'An / Old Plague / And A New / Remedy / A Plain Talk About Certain / Contagious Diseases / By / W. The company also sold a cough remedy, liniment, pain relief balm and lotion. ...Front-Chamberlain's Colic & diarrhea Remedy Side- Sydney NSW Side Chamberlain's Ltd Bottom-1185...The company also sold a cough remedy, liniment, pain relief balm and lotion. ...Brothers Davis and Lowell Chamberlain, along with their sister Izanna, established what became known as the Chamberlain Medicine Company in 1873. The Des Moines, Iowa-based company eventually stretched to Australia, Canada and South Africa. Chamberlains Colic and Diarrhea Remedy used alcohol, ether, and chloroform to soothe upset stomachs. The company also sold a cough remedy, liniment, pain relief balm and lotion. Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Remedy was one of many thousands of patent medicines that made incredible, and often false, claims about their effectiveness, and became tremendously profitable. Eventually government regulations were put in place to prevent medicine manufacturers from making unfounded claims about their products. This item is an example of a typical "over the counter" patented medicine commonly used by families. It reflect the changes in public health, medical practice and research over the last century.Small green tinted medicine bottle. Writing on front. Kiewa Valley Historical SocietyBottle - Castor Oil, Circa 1920's to 1900's
... True and trusted family "health" remedies were passed from generation to generation....True and trusted family "health" remedies were passed from generation to generation. ...This bottle of castor oil was used during the mid to late 1900's when there was a Hospital in the Kiewa Valley, but regarded as only for serious injuries and near death situation. For this reason many households had a "first aid" box full of items such as this bottle of castor oil. Home based remedies for non life threatening injuries and illnesses were a part of life in a semi remote rural region. True and trusted family "health" remedies were passed from generation to generation. This Castor Oil bottle is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it demonstrates the self reliance of the early farming and grazing pioneer families. Knowledge of "first aid" was uppermost to the survival of families before the late 1900's. Naturopathic remedies such as connected with the castor oil contained in this bottle, although may not be sanctioned by medical research, does not take into account of the positive "self healing" of the human mind (if you think it is doing you good it creates a positive action). Such preservation techniques were handed down through the generations.Medical Reference material was limited to books available and read and not not from "the internet" in the latter part of the 1900's. The availability of General Practitioners increased because of the boost in the population growth (SEC Vic Hydro Electricity Scheme) in the Kiewa Valley from 1940's onward. This small indigo coloured glass bottle has a narrow neck and a screw on lid.It has an embossed manufacturer's name and contents (Castor Oil) on one side and identification marks embossed on the underside base.medicine bottles, home first aid remedies, indigo glass medicine bottles -
