... Richard Myers....; 29 cm Berwick Mechanics Institute Free Library Book Richard Myers Berwick Mechanics Institute and Free Library ...What were Mechanics Institutes? Every country town seems to have one and they are often impressive 19th century buildings. Free Library is usually emblazoned across the facade, but nowadays there is probably a gallery, museum, or public hall in there. But where are the books? – and more intriguing, where are the mechanics? The answers are here. This book tells the story of one Mechanics Institute that is still operating as a library 136-odd years after being established. Along the way we learn much about how many of the other 1,300 Institutes established in Victoria operated.viii, 198 p.; 29 cmnon-fictionWhat were Mechanics Institutes? Falkiner, A. Millman, H. Morris, George Upham, J. McCLure, S. Fletcher, W. Parker, Thomas Myers ...Auctions of Crown land were introduced in the Colony of Victoria from 1851 to encourage settlers to occupy and work the land. Many squatters purchased land at auction at the upset (minimum) price of £1 per acre. In some areas where demand was high, such as the goldfields, the price realised at auction was much more. Land was put up for sale in the study area on the Burrumbeep run in May 1855, on the Lexington run in 1857, and on the Gorrinn run in 1858. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015) For 70 years or more, Yalla-y-Poora, Burrumbeep, Edgarley, Mount William and Narrapumelap ranked in the leading wool producers in Victoria. 1 Stud owners at Yalla-y-Poora, Eurambeen, Burrumbeep and Challicum crossed merino sheep with sheep descended from John Macarthur's Camden Park in New South Wales. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015) In what was to become the Ararat Mining Division, gold was discovered in May 1854 on the Burrumbeep run at a place that became known as Pinky Point on the Mount William goldfield. By 21 June 1854, between 600 and 1,000 people had arrived. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015)\ Town allotment plan for Burrumbeep. Thos Myers did not employ anyone. ...William Abednego Thompson (11 October 1811 – 23 August 1880), also known as Bendigo Thompson, was an English bare-knuckle boxer who won the heavyweight championship of England from James Burke on 12 February 1839.[3] He was inducted into The Ring magazine Hall of Fame in 1955, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991[3] and the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011. His nickname of "Bendigo" lives on in the name of a city and creek in Australia. (Wikipedia)Front cover of forty-two page magazine: pink heading with 'Australian Ring' inscribed in black text. Jan-Feb 1962 and 2/6 in top right hand corner. Photo of two boxers fighting below title, which contains an article on William Thompson, listed on the front page as 'Bold Bendigo'. Article regarding William Thompson ' Did Boxer Give Name to Victorian City?' by James G. Harrison, President Royal Historical Society of Victoria, Bendigo and District Branch, on page 28 and 29, details Thompson's boxing story and allegedly, how his fighting name came to be the name of the city of Bendigo. The text is annotated in dark blue biro, refuting some of the claims made in it regarding the early days on the field, and particularly in relation to Tom Myers. Copy of article attached to foolscap lined paper, with brown adhesive tape, enclosed with magazine.
