Series of four Black and White Photographs cable trams in Melbourne at the Bridge Road terminus or city during the mid 1920's/ .1 - Bridge road terminus with the car house or depot on the left hand side with the destination of Spencer St. .2 - Gripman possibly checking his watch with a depot worker? stepping off the tram. .3 - family stepping off the tram with cable trailer 368 in the view - Elizabeth St, near Flinders St? Adam Chandler advised by email 5/8/2020: " note there's a destination box fitted to the grip - from memory, these started to be used from the mid-1920s with the dummy and trailer repaints into the brown colour? That also looks to be either a 1925 or 26 Buick - the "moustache" shape at the top of the front radiator grille and the distinctly angled lower sash of the windscreen are further hints. Given the Richmond line closed in 1927 for conversion I'd say some time between 1924 and 29 June 1927." In an era predating the computerisation of equipment on public transport, where trams in Melbourne were driven by drivers and conductors sold fares, destinations were shown at the front and rear of the tram within a glazed box. A driver adjusted the roll to select each new trip destination. Given the length of rolls, in this case approximately nine metres, this could be a time consuming process. In addition to the named destination roll, each tram included a separate roll listing the route numbers.The roll was purchased at a Leski Auction in Armadale as part of a large group of tramways memorabilia including tram 'rolls' from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The auction house described the collection as "The collection of destination blinds or rolls that forms the core of the Railways Trams & Buses Section (Lots 655 – 732) is the best we have ever offered and represents a life-time of collecting by an Adelaide enthusiast, now deceased." Photograph of SW6 class tram No. 914 leaving Hawthorn Depot for North Richmond, showing route 78. The tram has a sign on the front about travelling in comfort between 9.30 and 4.30 on the front under the dash canopy lighting. The tram was built in May 1946. There are no holes in the dash canopy lighting which were installed in Nov. 1951. The S McIntosh's Bridge Hotel is in the background, along with four shops including the Oriental Cafe for Tea and Grills. It would appear that the gripman is ready to leave though a male passenger seems to be hurrying forward to catch the tram. The typed caption records that the dummy is No. 12, the photograph is dated Jan. 1924 and notes the slotted depot lead out track in the foreground. Photograph shows 12 men standing and sitting in rows facing the camera with a stone wall behind. One man, presumably the depot master, is dressed in a suit, tie and hat. The other 11 are in full tramway (MTOC) uniform with caps, two wearing the large pins used by conductors. As the MTOC only provided full uniforms to its traffic staff from 1901, this photograph can be dated between 1901 and 1916 when MTOC ceased, not 1895. The location was probably the Victoria Bridge car house (depot) in Victoria Street, North Richmond just west of the Yarra River, not a workshop. The usual flat fare for adults was three pennies, pronounced thrippence, not tuppence which was two pennies. There are many similar staff photos from this era which suggests they were initiated by MTOC.
