The article was published in 1925 and some alterations brought about by the efflux of time are necessary. As far as personnel is concerned, the death of Mr J.S. Dethridge, M.Inst.C.E., removed a very able engineer from the councils of the Commission. His place as Representative of Victoria has been taken by Mr R. Horsfield. It is also to be regretted that ill-health has caused the retirement of Mr E.M. de Burgh, M.Inst.C.E., the eminent Chief Engineer for New South Wales, who, with Mr Dethridge, was largely responsible for the Agreement cemented by the River Murray Waters Acts and, inter alia, for the design of the Hume Dam. The following summary of the progress of work on the Locks might be substituted for the latter part of Mr Dare’s paragraph. Up to the present time six locks and weirs have been completed, the highest in the series being at Torrumberry and the lowest at Blanchetown. Locks No.26 at Torrumberry and No.11 at Mildura were built by Victoria and are in use. A lock and weir (No.10) is in progress at Wentworth, and the necessary camp arrangements, purchase of plant, etc., have been undertaken in connection with lock and weir No.15 at Euston, both under the direction of New South Wales. The bridge was a necessity due to the building of the Hume Dam (Wier), 1919-1936. Bethanga Bridge is a long, nine-span, riveted-steel, variable depth, Pratt Truss road bridge of nine principal spans of 82 metres and a total length of 752 metres over the flooded valley of the Murray River, now part of Hume Reservoir. Because of its unique location, over the waters of a dam with the border running down the centre of the body of water, the Bethanga bridge is the only built structure shared by both New South Wales and Victoria. It was built 1.6 kilometres upstream of the dam and in 1961 was raised 300mm, with a concrete deck replacing the original wooden deck. The State Rivers and Water Supply Commission of Victoria and the New South Wales Department of Public Works were responsible for the construction works for the Hume Weir under the River Murray Waters Agreement. After further restoration, in 1985 the Prince and Princess of Wales re-commissioned PS ADELAIDE in a ceremony on their tour of the region. ...After restoration by Port shipwright Keven Hutchinson OAM, she returned to the waters of the Murray River on Sunday March 4th 1984 at 5.20pm. After further restoration, in 1985 the Prince and Princess of Wales re-commissioned PS ADELAIDE in a ceremony on their tour of the region. ...Built in 1866 in Echuca, the PS Adelaide is the oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating as a passenger vessel in the world. Engines made in Melbourne by Fulton and Shaw. JG Grassie was the original owner who was looking for a wool carrying boat as a commercial venture with the arrival of the rail at the Port of Echuca making the future look bright. Seutonius and Charles Officer of Murray Downs Station joined Grassie in financing the venture and they used the boat for 6 years before David Blair and partners (Echuca sawmillers) bought the Adelaide in July of 1872 and she began her long working life as a logging boat providing a shuttle service between the forests around Barmah and the mill, usually towing up to 3 or 4 barges. The paddle boxes were rebuilt from round to a square configuration in approximately 1924 by Charles Felshaw, local Echuca shipwright. The Adelaide had unusual strength for her size. Her career ended in the mid 1950s where she lay idle tied up near the mill at Echuca wharf. For a short time she was sold to Mildura but fortunately the Apex Club raised funds to buy her back to be a reminder of the riverboat days at the Port. She was lifted out for safekeeping into Hopwood Gardens where she remained on show for nearly 25 years. After restoration by Port shipwright Keven Hutchinson OAM, she returned to the waters of the Murray River on Sunday March 4th 1984 at 5.20pm. After further restoration, in 1985 the Prince and Princess of Wales re-commissioned PS ADELAIDE in a ceremony on their tour of the region. The world's oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating as a passenger vessel today built in Echuca in 1866. It is often considered the flagship of the operational fleet of the Port of Echuca given its age and known provenance to Echuca. The Adelaide is an iconic symbol of the riverboat timber and cargo trade that worked on the Murray River from the mid 1800s. Remarkably, PS ADELAIDE still operates with its original Fulton and Shaw engines.Composite hull, side wheeler with two single cylinder steam engines, producing a total of 36hp. A mile-long viaduct took two years to complete. The railway brought jobs and connected local mining and farming industries to broader markets. From 1918, Tallangatta's future was uncertain. Plans for a reservoir at the confluence of the Mitta Mitta and Murray Rivers threatened the town. Stage one of Lake Hume was completed in 1936, sparing the town temporarily. After WWII, demand for irrigation water rose—and residents were told the town would be flooded. Between 1952 and 1958, Tallangatta was relocated. The State Rivers and Water Supply Commission oversaw the move with a £3 million budget. Over 100 timber homes were relocated, 37 brick homes rebuilt, and 74 prefabricated houses brought in. Thirty-five new buildings were added, including hotels, banks, a butter factory, a hospital, and a modern shopping centre. The new town of Tallangatta was officially reopened by Governor Sir William Slim on June 29, 1956. In 1959 Helen moved to Horsham in western Victoria, a city to which she was closely linked for many years, then in 1977 to the port town of Echuca on the Murray River. ...Obituary, Ferntree Gully News, 1st June 2022 Helen Coulson, regarded as the finest historian of the Dandenong Ranges, passed away at the age of 103 years at Echuca on the Easter weekend. Ray Peace, Knox Historical Society researcher, reports: Helen Carlyle Duncan was born in December 1918 at Tecoma, then a tiny township in the Dandenong Ranges. Helen was the only daughter of Vincent Duncan, the East Riding member of Ferntree Gully shire council in 1930-32. The young Helen was involved in community affairs early in life, taking part in a community fair at Upwey in December 1928. In February 1946 Helen married Max Coulson of Mornington, and had two sons, Graeme and Richard; in later life she became a grandmother and great-grandmother. From her early years, Helen was aware of the district’s rich history. She started work for the shire of Ferntree Gully as a typist in January 1936. In the latter 1940s, Helen was writing regular feature articles for the metro media, such as The Argus and the Weekly Times. Helen’s two interests came together in February 1952 when she was commissioned by the shire council to create a comprehensive history of the district. In a 1953 article in the Ferntree Gully & District Times, Helen described herself as ‘an everyday housewife who enjoys writing’; Helen made good use of the local media to trace some of her more elusive contacts. The project took years of meticulous research and writing to complete. Helen was doubly fortunate, not only having the support of the shire council, but also in having the book published by a major publishing house, Longman Cheshire. The Story of the Dandenongs was published in 1959 and was an immediate success. The book was reprinted in 1968 and 1982, and is now considered a collector’s item. More than six decades after publication, Helen’s book remains a standard reference for the history of the district and is considered by many to be the finest work of its type. Helen was also commissioned to create a private family history for the Chandler family in the 1970s. Helen’s love of local history did not end with Ferntree Gully. In 1959 Helen moved to Horsham in western Victoria, a city to which she was closely linked for many years, then in 1977 to the port town of Echuca on the Murray River. Once the largest inland port in Victoria, by the 1970s the river port was dilapidated, and at risk of demolition. Helen Coulson was one of the prime movers of the restoration of the Port of Echuca as a heritage precinct which remains open (and popular) today. Helen Coulson celebrated her 100th birthday at Echuca in December 2018. The event was attended by more than 100 people from all over Victoria. At the time Helen attributed the success of her first book to being the right person in the right place at the right time. Helen spent her final years in a retirement village in Echuca but remained lucid, active and engaged with the local community to the end of her life. Helen’s dedication to the cause of local history, and the published works she leaves behind, will remain as a lasting legacy in Ferntree Gully, and other areas of Victoria where she lived and worked.
