Born in Castlemaine 1886. Maldwyn L. Williams (Leslie) was a prominent doctor in Bendigo, both at Bendigo Base Hospital and in private practice. He played several games in the Victorian Football League (VFL) whilst at university. Enlisted in Citizens Military Force in 1909 as Captain in Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. Promoted to Major in 1913. Sept 1915 - appointed Major in regular army, 8th Field Ambulance Unit. Nov 1915 - sailed for Egypt; June 1916 - sailed for Marseilles. Jan 1917 - promoted to Lt. Colonel and command of 1st Field Ambulance Unit. Wounded near Bapaume 2nd March 1917; died from wounds 3rd March 1917. Buried at Dernancourt Cemetery, France. The engraver of the plaque was C.G. Roeszler & Son of Melbourne. This business was founded in 1869 and is still family-owned and trading today. This company is responsible for many examples of engraving around Melbourne, including work on the 1928 Ringwood Memorial Clock and in St Paul's Cathedral in Flinders St, Melbourne. Hamilton Waterworks Trust was a predessor authority to Glenelg Region Water Authority (Glenelg Water). Glenelg Region Water Authority was constituted on 1 July 1994 under the Water Act 1989 and amalgamated the previous authorities of Glenelg Wannon Water Board, Glenelg Waterworks Trust, Hamilton Water Board and Shire of Mount Rouse Water and Sewerage Authorities.A cast iron seal press. The first local government authority for Marong was the Marong Road District (an early form of single-purpose local government), which was proclaimed on 19 August 1860. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was re designated as a Shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. On 2 December 1994, with the creation of Greater Bendigo City Council, it was abolished through the amalgamation which took place between Bendigo City, Eaglehawk Borough, Huntly Shire, part of McIvor Shire, part of Metcalfe Shire and Strathfieldsaye Shire to form the City of Greater Bendigo. This embosser would have been used over the years by the local council authority. Decorated hand operated cast iron embosser with 50mm stamp head attached. Two member badges from the The Returned Sailors, Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). The number 68 on the front could be 1968 as it is detachable and could be updated each year. The badge with 1921 could be the year of membership. The member number is engraved on the rear. The shield design is symbolic of the protection provided to those who wear it. Within the badge, red represents the blood ties of war that exist between comrades; white stands for the purity of the motives in joining the league – to render service without personal gain or ambition; and blue indicates a willingness to serve a comrade anywhere under the blue sky. The wattle represents Australia, with the leek, the rose, the thistle and the shamrock standing for Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland respectively. The RSSILA was the precursor to the Returned Services League (RSL) and provided support for returned servicemen after World War One. Worn by members of the Returned Sailors, Soldiers Imperial League of Australia, those eligible being members of all services, both wars, including nurses, who have returned from active service outside Australia. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. His full war record is available from the National Archives of Australia (B2455, MCLEAN JBM).The RSSILA was an important organisation for ex-servicemen and many Legatees would have been members.Enamel badges from the R.S.S.I.L.A. The centre of the badge shows a sailor and a soldier in raised detail. A blue enamel circle surrounds the central detail and has 'RETURNED SAILORS & SOLDIERS / IMPERIAL LEAGUE' in gilt lettering. The outer edges of the badge are white enamel with a floral spray to the top left and right of the blue circle. At the bottom of the badge is a red enamelled scroll with 'AUSTRALIA' written in gilt lettering.
