In the years of Allan Doney’s photography, landmark buildings succumbed to fire, neglect and redevelopment. He photographed the grey sand hills from Bendigo’s mining past, the streetscapes, poppet heads, miners’ cottages, gracious homes with ornate verandahs, trams and much more. Above all, his photographs show how much of the city has survived from the 19th century – and how much has not. Through two decades of great change, Allan Doney was there to capture ways people interacted with it. Although he travelled to many other places in Northern Victoria and beyond in search of subjects for his art, he seemed to always return to Bendigo for inspiration.

This photograph is part of the Jessie Partington Angus collection. Jessie is possibly in the choir. She was in the Melbourne Philharmonic between the ages of 20 to 30. This photograph was taken at one of the receptions for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip during the royal tour of 1954.Jessie Angus was a well known and long time choir member in the Diamond Valley. Published in 1952, before the death of King George this book tells the family story of the Windsors in anticipation of the first Royal Visit of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to Australia. An added note from a member of the public: "Bit of information on the book “Our Royal Guests” 1952. None of these books were sold or distributed as the visit was cancelled due to King's ill health and passing. My father printed them and they were instructed to have them picked up and destroyed. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Sydney on 3rd February 1954 aboard the SS Gothic, a passenger liner converted into a royal yacht. Their arrival attracted an estimated 1 million onlookers in a city with a population of 1,863,161 people. The royal couple visited 57 towns and cities during the 58 days they spent in Australia. They travelled the country by plane, train, ship and car from Cairns in the north, Broken Hill in the west to Hobart in the south. In 1948, following the completion of the demobilisation process, the Citizens Military Force was reformed and the Battalion was reconstituted as the 38th battalion (Northern Victorian Regiment)". In 1952, after National Service Scheme was enacted the Battalion was split to help form the 59th Battalion (Hume Regiment). In 1955. the Battalion formed an Alliance with South Staffordshire Regiment.
