R.S.L. is the Returned and Services League of Australia, a member based charity founded in 1916, and the largest veterans' charity in Australia. It provides a support network and community for veterans and their families. They have a commemorative service each year on 25th April, ANZAC Day.The Mt Beauty RSL committee members in 1949 is a list of people living in Mt Beauty at the time and who were working as a support team for veterans and their families. The ANZAC crowd at the temporary memorial indicate the interest in the town for a commemoration and the need for a more permanent structure.Both Black & White large photos. 1. Staughton Vale State School Honor Roll circa 1920 Staughton Vale is located on the South Eastern side ofn the You Yangs. Staughton Vale High School was opened on the 5th of November 1875 The first head teacher was Thomas Scott. It had a chequered history, operating only part-time for some periods, closing in 1949, but reopening in 1957, and finally closing for good on the 30th of September 1968. George Robert Wheeler joined the RSL in 1918. In 1936 he started volunteering with the Castlemaine RSL and joined the Committee, he was President in 1939. He moved to Bendigo in 1941 and became involved in Bendigo RSL Funerals and conducted most until late 1948. he did home visits to families who had a loss in WW2. In 1943 he was appointed Honorary Secretary of No 27 District Board, a position he held until 1962. In 1959 he was appointed State Councillor for No 27 District Board until 1968. He was elected to the Committee of the Bendigo RSL Branch in 1942. he served on Committee to 1949 then a year in 1951, a total of 9 years. During those years he was Treasurer for the years 1947/48 & 49. For about 10 years he wrote the Leading paragraphs in the Bendigo Advertiser in the Ex Servicemen's Column. In 1959 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and retired at age 73. George enlisted on 13.3.1917 as part of the July Reinforcements and posted to Medical Corp No 18465. Pre embarkation he had postings with Clearing Hospital Broadmeadows, No 11 General Hospital, AMC Bendigo, Clearing Hospital Seymour. Embarked 21.11.1917 and disembarked at Australia Camp Suez 15.12.1917 then embarked for Alexandria camp on 31.12.1917 disembarking on 2.1.1918. On 8.1.1918 he embarked for Taranto Southern Italy then finally for England arriving on 24.1.1918. He served with others as Hospital Orderlies in the above places. On 23.2.1918 he was hospitalised with Perineal Abcess, later with Influenza on 14.3.1918 and then "Tubercle Lung" and returned to Australia on 12.5.1918. On arrival he was admitted to No 5 Aust General Hospital on 16.7.1918 then the Military Sanitorium 22.7.1918. He was finally discharged on 22.1.1919. In a 5 page brief of his life which came with his collection he stated that after discharge he spent a lot of time in hospital over the next 15 months. At discharge the medical officer told him that his Life expectancy was 10 years. On 1.7.1913 he is alloted to D Coy 67th Bn (Bendigo) Regt No 671 as part of quota 1895 (Year of his birth) He then enlists in the AIF on 10.7.1915 No 4905 age 19 years in 15th Reinforcements 7th Bn AIF. Embark for Eygpt 7.3.1916, embark for France 2.6.1916, Transfer to 48th Bty 12 F.A.B 17.4.1916, transfer to 24th F.A.B 15.6.1916, Transfers to 43rd Bty 11th F.A.B 25.1.1917, detached to Ordnance Works Viviers Hill 15.2.1917, Promoted Bombadier 10.12.1917, attends 2nd Army Artillery School, promoted Corporal 16.3.1918, promoted Sgt 17.6.1918, promoted Bty Sgt Major 15.12.1918, awarded MID 31.12.1918, embark for Australia 11.5.1919, discharged from the AIF. Post WW1 he enlists in the 38th Bn (CMF Bendigo) in 1921, he is Commissioned as an Officer in Sept 1929, from that date till 1940 he is the CO of the BN. The same year he transfers to the 8th Bn CMF. Besides his Mention in Despatches (WW1) he is also awarded the Long Service and Efficiency decorations. On 25.4.1942 he enlists in VDC age 46 years No V362516 in the 15th BN Volunteer Defence Corp for part time duty with the rank of Lt Col, His appointment is terminated on 19.12.1945. In 1941 he is elected to the Committee of the Bendigo RSL, serves as Snr Vice President 1949 - 57 then President 1958 - 60. This map originally came via Mitiamo East Loddon RSL who when they closed their Sub branch the map and their records were handed to the Bendigo RSL for safe keeping. Born and raised in Scotland, Annabel Elsie Couper was 24 when she met Captain Frank O’Neil Ford, a British army officer, in Burma (now Myanmar). They married in Scotland two years later and returned to Burma for 10 years. The family were moved to a hill station during World War 2, Frank recruiting and training soldiers, Annabel working closely with the locals and working as cipher clerk for the army. When the women and children were eventually evacuated a long journey by train, plane and ship brought Annabel and the children to Calcutta. She began working for the Red Cross. They returned to England in 1944 and in 1949 they came to Berwick. Annabel quickly joined local groups, the Red Cross, the CWA and the Berwick Hospital Auxiliary. The family moved to Upper Beaconsfield in the 1960s where Annabel joined the RSL Auxiliary, Beaconhills Golf Club and attended St. John’s Church. She returned to Berwick after Frank died in 1980, but did not lose her close connection to Upper Beaconsfield. In 2001 she received the Red Cross Laurel Wreath Service Award for 50 years of service. When the History of the Bendigo RSL was being compiled by Murray Poustie the original foolscap documents were put together and then reprinted in these volumes in A4 size. These are the minutes of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch from 1960 - 2000 being 1960 - 74, 1975 - 91 and 1992 - 2000. .4) Same leather volume these being the Annual Reports of the Sub Branch from 1964 - 2000. .5) Same leather volume these being the Annual General meetings from 1949 - 2014. Jack Fogarty was made a Life Member of the R.S.L in 1957. He joined the league in 1920 and was one of the original members when the Wangaratta Sub-Branch affiliated with Anzac House in 1929. He was elected to the committee in 1940, was Senior Vice Present in 1949 and President in 1957-8. Jack was also the Foundation President of the R.S.L. Club.
