The foundation stone for Rupertswood Mansion was laid on 29th August 1874 by Mrs. W. J. Clarke, daughter-in-law of 'Big Bull'. Work was being done repairing a bridge on the Sunbury - Bendigo line at the former Rupertswood siding, which in the past was used initially by guests who would arrive at the Rupertswood mansion and of later years by students from Salesian College. Rupertswood Mansion was the Sunbury residence of the Clarke family from 1874 until 1922 when H.V.McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame bought it from Hon. W.L. Russell Clarke in 1922. After the death of H.V.McKay in 1926, it was purchased by W. Naughton who then sold the mansion and 700 acres of land to the Salesian Fathers, who are the present owners. Two viaduct bridges were constructed across the Jacksons Creek valley at Rupertswood on the Bendigo rail line to bring the trains down the steep incline into Sunbury station.A photograph of the railway viaduct bridge showing one end of the span and 4 of the pylons. The Rupertswood Gatehouse, iron fence and gates are of state historical and architectural importance as they are probably the most distinctive structures of their type in Victoria.A coloured photograph of the Rupertswood Lodge, iron fence and gates. The fence and gates at the entrance of the Rupertswood Estate have a heritage listing. In the 1970s extensive renovation work and repairs were done to the 'Lodge' at Rupertswood. This trophy was presented to a new cadet for the 'pursuit of excellence' of Rupertswood Battery of Horse Artillery and donated by Martin Glass and Gary Bieser. 'Rupertswood' mansion, in Sunbury, was the former home of Sir Rupert Clarke. His original estate covered 137317 acres in various areas in the district of Bourke in the 1880s. The 'Rupertwood' property was eventually acquired by the Salesian Order and functioned as a boys' school where many were trained in farming skills. In the 1990s it became a coeducational secondary college. The Clarke family acquired and settled much land in the Sunbury area and today 'Rupertswood' Mansion is one of the surviving grand nineteenth century mansions in Victoria. The Catholic Church has also played a prominent role in educating many of the young people in the district. It was produced in 2009 to mark 150 years of the story of Sunbury's rail history and includes information about Rupertswood Mansion.The railway came to Sunbury in 1859 and was the first regional government railway to be completed in Victoria.
