The Somerset Inn was built for Edward Carter Holmes by carpenter Isaac Sutherland and his two sons in 1855/1856. Situated on Bruce's Creek on the Shelford - Bannockburn Road. Bruce's Creek was the original name for current day Bannockburn. Black and white photograph of a house with slate roof and window shutters. The front fence is stone. The house is the former Somerset Inn (later a private residence). This building is located on the Leigh River at Bannockburn and was the home of Edward Carter and Sarah Holmes. Ref: Alan Holt records - This property was part of Lot 25 in the Windsor Park Estate which was subdivided in 1883. The house of 12 squares was built in 1888 for John Abernethy, an engineer. He also built 62 Windsor Crescent as a coachhouse and cottage. 1888-1891: Owners = John & Sarah Abernethy. John Abernethy died while on a trip to Hong Kong in 1891. 1891-1909: Owner = Mrs Sarah Abernethy 1910-1917: Owner = H Jenkinson The properties at 62 and 64 Windsor Crescent were separated during WW1 (by H Jenkinson). The building is part of the former Sunbury Asylum complex and was constructed in 1906. It had three buildings on its east side and three on the west side. Male patients were housed in the buildings on the east and females were in the west side buildings. The slates on the roof were from Wales.This building housed the patients at the Asylum right up until its closure in 1992.A coloured photograph with a white border of a Federation red brick 3 storey building with aquarium slate roof and ventilation turrets projecting from the slate roof. This is Building 3 and was the Male Hospital at the former Sunbury Asylum until 1980 when the Western wing was destroyed by fire causing the closure of the entire unit. Part of the building was the centre for Nursing Studies when the site was used by Victoria University.This is one of the decorative late Victorian buildings that can be seen on the former Sunbury Asylum site.A coloured photograph of red brick late Victorian building with white trims and a pitched slate roof and a front verandah.
