View down the Main Street of Sassafras looking south with the Mechanics Institute in the centre of the picture. The raspberry patch in the foreground belonged to Woniger Hansen who built Mountain Rest (Rostrevor). The land was subdivided after his death in 1923. Clovelly Guest House was formerly Braco Park Guest House, owned and run by Eliza and Grace Murdoch. The original Guest House 'Clovelly' , owned by Mrs. Techow, was situated in The Crescent at Sassafras. After it burned down in 1921, Mrs. Techow purchased Braco Park and renamed it Clovelly. The site was purchased by the Education Department c1985 and is now Sherbrooke Community School. This set of small photographs was produced by the Rose Stenograph Co. c1913 to be included in photograph albums. The area known as South Sassafras, was opened up for settlement in 1893 and the name was changed to Kallista in 1925.A small, paper envelope containing 12 photographs of Sassafras that are reproductions of Rose Series postcards. Name 'Mountain Highway" is incorrect as the Mountain Highway was the Sassafras - Basin Road though it may not have received that name by 1950. The correct name is the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road at Mt. Dandenong / Kalorama as Falls Road is the boundary. Note: Heavy roadside vegetation, no white lines at side of road.
