It would have been in use when the owner was outside or travelling and used to combat the unsavoury smells of a farm or industrial area. This item is of interest as an object used by women more than a hundred years ago. It has no known local provenance and will be useful for display This is an egg-shaped perfume bottle made of opaque glass (opaline?). It has an inner lining and cotton wool inside the lid of the top. The top is brass with a brass hinge. Attached to the lid is a brass chain and circular ring to attach the bottle to a chatelaine belt or handbag. The exact creation date of this chatelaine is unknown, however the hallmarks and engravings on some of the attached objects indicate that this chatelaine was made in the late 1890s. The shark tooth and the liberty bell attached to the chatelaine suggest that the item once belonged to an Australian who had connections to America. The compact, scent bottle lid, and feminine design of the other objects suggest that this wasowned by a woman. The name on the plate indicates that this object may have belonged to someone with the surname Heine. The hallmarks on the scent bottle lid and the compact indicate that they were made in Birmingham, England in the late 1890s, and that the compact was made by H. Matthews. Chatelaines where used by both men and women, usually fastened to a belt or pocket, and small household objects were attached to the main body of the chatelaine by chains. These perfumes were owned by Marjorie Burton. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made many of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie was married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils used to give the human body a pleasant scent. Modern perfumery began in the late 19th century but it was only in the 20th century that scents and designer perfumes were really mass produced. These items are evocative of the mid 20th century.One bottle of 4711 Eau de Cologne.
