This booklet tells the story of the bell from the "S. S. Santhia" and how it came to Bogong State School, Victoria. "Santhia" belonged to the British India Line. On 6th November 1943 she was in service as a troopship when she caught fire and capsized at No. 3 Garden Reach Jetty, Calcutta. Due to the additional weight of water pumped into her to extinguish the fire, "Santhia" heeled over and remained in the mud of the River Hooghly until a successful salvage was completed in January 1946. The salvage operation was carried out by Captain J. P. Williams of Melbourne and his team of Australian divers nine and a half months after the commencement of operations. "Santhia" was the sixty seventh ship salvaged by Captain Williams. "Santhia's" Bell was presented by Captain Williams to Mr G.G. Jobbins, Chairman of Commissioners for installation at Bogong State School. The ceremony of presenting the bell took place on 21st February 1947. The bell bears the following inscription:- "Presented to G.G.Jobbins, Esq., Chairman, State Electricity Commission, by Captain J.P. Williams for Bogong School, on December 6th, 1946. This bell was recovered from the wreck of the "S.S.Santhia" sunk in the Hooghly River, Calcutta, and raised by an Australian salvage party."This booklet is significant because it documents an unusual event linking Bogong State School to a World War II salvage operation.A booklet consisting of images and text which tells the story of S.S. The bell was installed in the late 1880s at Myrtleford State School 955, Elgin Street, Myrtleford and rang there until the school relocated to a new site in early 1939. The bell followed the pupils to O'Donnell Avenue, but was dismantled and placed in storage in the 1950s. This bell is tied to the early daily life of state schooling in Elgin Street, from the commencement of the decline of gold mining in the district until immediately before the outbreak of World War 2. Chris Bailey’s father loaned this bell to Newcomb High School for the first two years until a PA system was installed. It came from his father’s boat in the Middle East. Chris was a Form 1 student in 1969. The bell is now kept at Chris’ home, 4 Yvonne Street, Belmont, 3216. Metal Bell

The Story of S.S. "Santhia" sank while in service as a troopship, of her subsequent salvage, and of how her bell came to Bogong School. Bogong State School was built and used from the 1940s when the SECV was constructing the KHES. The school bell was unique having originated from the ship "Santhia'. This bell was used to begin and end recess and lunch breaks at Strathmore Williamstown Grammar School. It was introduced by Mabel Martha Molland, Principal (1914 - 1963) and was in use at the Williamstown campus until the installation of an electronic bell system in the early 2010s. It is known at the school as 'Miss Molland's Bell' and was featured in The Old School Tie exhibition at the Old Treasury Museum in 1999. The exhibition label for the bell read, 'This bell has been used to summon students to class for as long as anyone can remember, although it is reported that in Mr. Gerity's time (1897-1914) classes were "signalled by Gerity appearing at the door and waving an enormous white handkerchief the size of a bed sheet" (Reported in Johnson, J. 1987, The Westbourne and Williamstown Grammar Schools, pg. 37)'. The bell has historic significance as it originated with Mabel Molland, Principal (1914 - 1963), a very prominent figure in the history of the school and has been handled and used by countless students, assigned the coveted task of ringing the bell, over many years.Brass bell with a turned wood handle. The school bell was donated in February 1982 to Beaconhills College by Errol Robinson (1916-1989) chairman of the local water board. Mr Robinson was the father-in-law of one of the school parents - Mr Ted Fankhauser who was later to be the school's first Business Administrator. The bell was dedicated at the school's annual church service. The dedication was made by Archbishop Sir Frank Woods on 28 March 1982. The bell is no longer in use but serves as a symbol of the founding years of the college. Note there has been some discussion about the original donation date actually occurring in 1983 - this is being investigated.The brass bell, gifted to Beaconhills College in February 1982 by local Water Board chairman Errol Robinson, is a cherished symbol of the College’s formative years. In 1860 Smeaton residents appealed for funds to establish a school. Patrick Curtain, and his co-workers raised more than £150 plus a land grant (Allot A, Sect 2, Township of Smeaton). Head Teacher John Forbes, with assistant Zillah North, opened a timber school building which measured 36ftx18ft (11.0x5.5m) on 1 September 1861 with 44 children. Rising enrolment to 65 in 1868 made building alterations necessary. During 1870-1 a residence of four rooms was supplied and in October 1882 a 20ftx18ft (6.1x5.5m) classroom. In 1907 a new brick building accommodated 122 children. Among notable ex-pupils are Major-General Bridgeford, Frank Wright ( Musical Director of the London County Council), Alex Wright, (AKA singer Andre Navarre), and Les Brooks. (Visions and Realisations) In 2013 it was announced that Smeaton Primary School would close. The Hepburn advocate reported: "A Department of Education spokesman has confirmed the Smeaton Primary School council recently voted unanimously to recommend the school close at the end of the year. The school currently has 12 students with enrollments dwindling during the past few years and no prep students to its boost numbers or its future. The school’s imminent closure comes as the Smeaton community gears up for the town’s 175th anniversary which will be celebrated later this year. The school bell has been used in various forms for several centuries. In Australia and the UK it was often a hand bell, located on the teacher's desk in a small school. In larger schools it was positioned in a central area, and one bell was used to signal to all classrooms. In North America it was more usual to find a large bell on a stand located in a central area of the school where it could be heard by everyone throughout the premises. More recently, the school bell has become wall located, and electrically activated, using a mechanical timing apparatus. Now the same bell is computer programmed and activated, although there are many older bells still in operation. The school bell was rung at the beginning at the school day, often to summon students to the morning assembly in larger schools. It was then rung throughout the day to signal the start and end of specific lesson periods, the beginning and end of school morning and afternoon breaks, the lunch period, and the end of the school day, no doubt eagerly awaited by many students! The bell came from the ship Netherby, which was wrecked on King Island. The full story of the bell's journey from King Island is unclear, but assumption is that Roadknight family may have transferred it from their property in the Western District to Gippsland. Miss Bell (1900 – 1984) The ‘Miss Bell Playground’ was named after Miss Rebecca Adelaide Bell, a retired teacher who regularly helped out at Mt Dandenong Primary school for 8 years. Born in NSW, Miss Bell had taught in several states and had fond memories of holidays spent at ‘Mountjoy’ in the Dandenong Ranges. When she retired Miss Bell built a home in Jeeves Avenue where she lived out the rest of her life with her Siamese cats. Miss Bell helped the children with reading, grammar spelling and history. She really cared about the children and her school visits brought her a lot of happiness. The settlement of Cabbage Tree Creek is located on the Princes Highway, 27 km east of Orbost in East Gippsland. The creek, which flows through undulating forest, takes its name from the patches of Cabbage Fan palms growing along its course. A school commenced classes in 1913, but enrolment was small and at times the school operated part time with several other small schools in the area. The school building served as a hall for the district. About 1946 two sawmills commenced operations at Cabbage Tree Creek, and the Forests Commission ranger was stationed in the area. The increased population allowed the school to have more teachers and make improvements. In 1953, a new prefabricated building was erected on a new site. However, by the 1970s employment in the timber industry was unstable and the population decreased. By 1974 the school again had only one teacher and eventually closed in 1993 to amalgamate with the Orbost primary School in Ruskin Street, Orbost. (Ref.
