Item 48. Black book with two tone brown design inside covers. School Book titled 'Katheder und Schulbank'. Written in German. Sticker in the front of the book: A. The school exercise book belonged to Florence Tyler who was born in 1884 and died in 1914 at 30 years of age. Two letters within the exercise book are dated 1898 so it is presumed this is the year Florence compiled the book. The school was Warrnambool State School No. 1743 which opened in 1876 after the earlier Warrnambool Common School closed. This exercise book is of interest as an example of school subjects and standards covered at a 6th grade level in the late 19th century. A school exercise book of 50 pages. The hard cover of the book has a blue pattern and a label to identify the school and student. The pages are ruled with handwriting in black ink and ruled dividing lines in red ink. Each page covers a different subject - English (grammar, parsing, writing, spelling, syntax, poetry), Arithmetic, Geography, History, Science and Music. Each page has been stamped with a purple oval stamp containing the words CREDIT MARK and the initials W.W.Front Cover - VICTORIA. WARRNAMBOOL. STATE SCHOOL No. 1743. This book was compiled by Margaret Smith a long time member of Orbost Historical Society and Slab Hut manager/volunteer.This book documents the education history of the Orbost district and is a useful research tool.The School Book - a display book containing the history and photographs of schools in the Orbost district from 1890 to 1959. These photoengraving blocks were created for the publication of a booklet celebrating the centenary of the Leneva State School which was celebrated in 1975. Construction of the Leneva School number 1506 - then called Middle Creek - was completed by January 30th 1875. The contracted builder was Mr. Jas. O'Keefe and his tender for the school and residence was £245-8-0. The school was opened on 10th May 1875 with George S. Manns as Head Teacher. The first building was a structure of Murray Pine, with a slate roof. The building consisted of 4 rooms and a lean-to veranda. Three of these rooms formed a residence and the remaining one was the classroom. Classes began with about 40 children attending grades 1-6. Lessons were also held for older people if they desired them. Head Teacher Manns remained in charge for 20 years. This item is significant because it was created to produce a local school centenary booklet.A set of photo engraving blocks set up for use in publication of a booklet for the Leneva School Centenary. The Ballarat Junior Technical School opened in 1913 as a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. The first location was the Dana Street Primary School, and the first principal was Albert W. Steane. In 1921 a custom built building was erected on the grounds of the Ballarat School of Mines. A number of the students enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces (AIF) during 1913, 1914. They were Robert Borradale, Albert Burge, Howard Bennett, Norman Carmichael, Reginald Crick, Herbert Collins, Frances Davis, Arthur Dixon, Frank Edwards, George Gilbert and Sydney Townsend. Frances Davis was killed while serving. Those who enlisted have been remembered with an Honour Board with their names. This is at SMB.Book is charcoal blue cloth on hard cover with red leather spine and corners. End papers are brown/grey "stone" patterned thick gloss paper. Name of school and type of book stamped on gold on the spine - REGISTER, BALLARAT JUNIOR TECHNICAL SCHOOL" It is the first Ballarat Junior Technical School Roll Book. The book includes handwritten names, age, date of birth, address, school last attended, grade, qualifications, date of entry, cause, results and remarks. This is a typical exercise book used by students throughout the 20th century. Students often had a book for each subject . This one has samples. The work is written in fountain pen and contains examples of handwriting , arithmetic, spelling and English. Jack French was from the Panmure district.This exercise book is a good example of school work from the 1930's. This book belonged to Roma Cameron. Roma Cameron was the daughter of Harry Purchase Cameron and Lilian Gladys (nee Harding). Roma married Ronald Richard Smithin 1944 and is the mother of Lorraine (Mrs Peter Coulton) and Margaret Smith. Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course. Like many others at the time, the Camerons bred race horses.Harry died in 1964 aged 75. Roma was the youngest of three siblings: Jean (Mrs John Gavin (Jack) Ralston) and James (Jim) (m. Joan Hossack). This book as an example of school work in the early 20th century. It reflects the the way reading was taught, to young children in Victoria. The Cameron family is prominent in the Orbost district. Pencils and ink were used to write and draw with cutouts from newspapers etc. and occasionally a typewriter was used.Lorraine Smith was a student at Mt Beauty in 1963.
