Award to Alan Durward Mickle (20 August 1882 – 15 May 1969) who later became a writer of essays and verse. He received the cup for outstanding athletic performance at the school's annual sports day in 1899. The cup was awarded to the 'Champion Athlete' or winner of the premier track and field events (such as the 100-yard, 200-yard, or hurdles races). Queen's College, St Kilda was a prominent private secondary school for boys and girls located in St Kilda, Melbourne. It operated independently of the residential Queen's College at the University of Melbourne. The school grounds were located near the corner of Fitzroy Street and Grey Street. F.G.Barnard, writing in 1910, recorded that Ernest Ingle opened a boys' school in a private house in Cotham Road, Kew, in 1872. The school was later moved to larger premises in Charles Street, where suitable school rooms were added. Ingle's career was cut short by a fatal attack of typhoid fever in 1875. The school then passed into the hands of Mr. J. Henning Thompson. Under Thompson's management the school speedily became a strong rival to the neighbouring Hawthorn Grammar School. Barnard also lists in his Jubilee History of Kew, that Dr N.C. Vance [winner of the trophy for the 440 yards running event] was a notable alumnus of Kew High School. It is assumed that N.C. Vance was the son of Rev G.O. Vance who was appointed vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Kew, in 1870. This is a tangible memento of the first Kew High School, awarded to a pupil eight years after the school's establishment. The trophy is historically interesting as it was presented to N.C. Vance by Ann Bon, a notable Kew resident and a supporter of Indigenous People in Victoria, particularly William Barak and his family.Silver plated trophy in the form of a cup on a pedestal with two arms, each surmounted with pine cones. The trophy has a range of design features including convex and concave decorated surfaces created by repoussé (i.e.hammering). Specific decorative aspects include scrolling at the top of the cup and floral sprays at front and the rear of the trophy. There is a single inscription identifying the school, the event, the winner and the identity of the person presenting the trophy. The metal used in the cup section of the trophy is heavier and thicker than that used in the rest of the trophy. There are no compositional or maker marks on the trophy.Inscribed: "Kew High School / Old Boys Cup / Presented by / Mrs John Bon / Won by / N Vance 1880"dr n vance, kew high school -- kew (vic.), private schools -- kew (vic.), sports trophies -- kew (vic.), n.c. vance

Trophy base only; going by the inscribed dates it appears to relate to an Inter-school Relay Race conducted at the annual Sports Day between High School, CEGGS (Church of England Girls Grammar School) and CPLC.. The Touchstone school magazine confirms further CPLC wins in 1946, 1948-51, 1953 - 1958 No further mention in 1959 - 1962. In 1951 The Touchstone mentions that CPLC were the first winners of a new cup presented by CEGGS. In 1960 the Ballarat Girls' School Association re-formed after 10 years. This may suggest that the Inter-school Relay Race event was absorbed into general inter-school athletic events form that date onwards. The Senior Technical Schools Athletics Association ‘Herald Shield’ is one of many timber and metal repoussé commissions undertaken by students and staff at the Ballarat Technical Art School. The School was known for the quality of its art metal work which was applied to product, interior and commemorative designs. Between 1915 and 1936 Wilfred Kenneth (c1883-1957) taught boys and girls at preparatory and senior levels, including the ‘Art Metal Work and Repoussé’ industrial design specialisation. During World War I, Kenneth oversaw the training of repatriated soldiers which catalysed into a new, a successful art metal business, the Decorative Metal Craft Company in Chancery Lane, Ballarat. The shield was given by the proprietors of The Herald.Timber and metal repousse shield listing winning teams from 1918-1940. 1918 - Ballarat 1919 - Ballarat 1920 - Working Men's College Melbourne (now RMIT) 1921 - No contest 1922 - Swinburne 1923 - Ballarat 1924 - Ballarat 1925 - Ballarat 1926 - Ballarat 1927 - Geelong 1928 - Maryborough 1929 - Bendigo 1930 - Bendigo 1931 - Working Man's College 1932 - Wonthaggi 1933 - M.T.C. 1934 - Ballarat 1935 - Ballarat 1936 - Ballarat 1937 - No Contest 1938 - Ballarat 1939 - Ballarat 1940 - Geelong Above list engraved into metalherald shield, athletics, working mans college, rmit, ballarat school of mines, trophy, commission, art metal, repousse, ballarat technical art school, wilfred kenneth
