He left Germany in 1934, raching Australia via South Africa during World War Two. As a German national he was interned for the remainder of the war, but obtained permanent residence in 1946. He restored antiques while establishing his name as a sculptor. In 1948 he held his first exhibition and by the late 1950s was receiving commissions. In 1949 the Knorr family moved to Monbulk Road, Emerald, where Hans Knorr opened his sculpture gallery in 1961. He died in 1988. The steel and glass sculpture was donated to Emerald Museum by Hans Knorr's widow, Hilde, a prominent author. The glass came from insulators on Emerald's first telephone lines. At the sculptor's request, linesmen saved the insulators when they replaced the lines. The insulators were melted down and reshaped for the sculpture.Free standing iron and glass abstract on castors. Hans Knorr was an abstract sculptor who lived in Emerald until 1979. This Art Gallery was the first privately owned rural art gallery in Victoria. Hans became a pre-eminent sculptor of his generation, working in aluminium, bronze, steel, glass and wood. Much of his work was commissioned for churches and cathedrals in Australia and overseas. Pieces of his work can be found in every state of Australia, USA, Hong Kong, France, England and many other countries. This sketch of the gallery was done as part of the publicity of the launch of the book, 'The Hills of Home: A Bicentennial History of the Sherbrooke Shire', in 1988. As well as doing this particular sketch, Jillienne Winzenried's pen and ink drawings feature throughout this book.
