The sea water baths were built in 1876 on the line of the railway track and were moved to the Gilles Street site with the advent of the railway. Salt water was drawn from the sea by a windmill and later by steam pump. The main pool was 100 feet by 50 feet. The present site of Heritage Works, the offices of the Warrnambool & District Society Inc. and Warrnambool Family History Group, is on the area of the Town of Warrnambool's Swimming Baths of 1890s. The poster advertises these Swimming Baths as “the most complete in the Southern Hemisphere”. In February 1877 a Baths Company (1050 shares) was formed in the town of Warrnambool for the establishment of the baths at the south end of Gillies Street. The baths were filled with sea water from Lady Bay, originally pumped by a windmill situated near the current Surf Lifesaving Club and carried by iron pipes to the Public Baths; later the water was pumped by a gas motor. Hot and cold fresh water baths were advertised. The gentlemen’s bath was 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, of graduating depth. A second bath, solely for ladies, was 60 feet long by 30 feet wide. Hot Sea water Baths were also part of the institution, and were sought after for their ‘wonderful curative powers’, and ‘incomparable’ as a ‘tonic for the feeble’. In June 1881 the Hot Sea Baths were opened, and both hot and cold water baths were supplied at reasonable charges. Patrons came from near and far to receive the benefits. The manager of the Baths was J. Kirkpatrick. The Baths Company struggled for several years without success, so in 1883 the baths were sold to the Borough Council for 1250 pounds. The original shareholders received nothing for their outlay; the overdraught was over the sale price. In May 1884 the Council announced that an estimated they has spent 1000 pounds in improving the baths since purchasing them and were now returning an income of 11 per cent. This is a framed photograph of the men's pool at the Warrnambool Salt Water Baths. These Baths were originally built at the end of Gilles Street on the line of the present railway line in 1876 but were rebuilt in 1889 further north in Gilles Street when the railway line was opened. The water was pumped from the sea, initially by a windmill and later by a gas pump. The men's pool was 100 feet by 50 feet and the women's pool was 60 feet by 30 feet with bathing strictly segregated in the 19th century. A building nearby housed marble cubicles with hot spa baths with the water heated on the site and a caretaker's cottage completed the complex. Men's nude bathing was a feature of the early 20th century. Originally built by a local public company the Baths were taken over by the Warrnambool Council. These baths were superseded by the opening in 1961 of an Olympic Pool In Warrnambool. Warrnambool has been an attraction for tourists for over 100 years. It has been popular as a coastal resort and today the winter whale season brings more tourists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Warrnambool was promoted as a spa and health resort, partly because of its hot and cold sea water baths and partly because of its bracing climate and attractive coastline. Thunder Point, depicted on this item, has been a popular visiting spot for tourists for many years. Buying a high quality ornament such as this one was a popular activity of tourists in the mid 20th century. Tourists today buy souvenir items but the choice and range vary from what was available 80 years ago. This item is retained as an example of a local souvenir bought by tourists in the mid 20th century. This is a small white china mug with a gilt edging or strip around the top opening rim, the base and the handle. These two bottles were found by workmen building a new retaining wall on the north side of the Les O’Callaghan History House building in Gilles Street Warrnambool. The wall replaced one damaged beyond repair following a car accident in 2019. The building was erected in 1889 as the caretaker’s cottage in the Warrnambool Sea Baths complex (for most of its existence it had two swimming pools, a hot sea water baths building and a caretaker’s cottage). The water in the baths were pumped up from the ocean and, for the hot baths, heated on site. These baths were the municipal baths until the mid 1950s. The bottles may have originated from the one of the families residing in the cottage or from passers-by in the adjoining Merri Street or from patrons of the baths. They appear to be over 100 years old but there is no way the ownership of the bottles can be established.These bottles are of interest as archeological finds after repair works to the Les O’Callaghan History House. .1 A dark green (or black?) glass bottle with a hollowed out concave base, no stopper and a slightly chipped rim on the top. This item was bought as a souvenir of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century when cigarette smoking was more widespread and was socially acceptable. Tourism in Warrnambool has been an important industry for over 100 years. In the late 19th century Warrnambool was promoted as a spa resort with its mild climate, sea bathing and its hot and cold sea water baths complex. Today visitors come in winter for the May Racing Carnival and to see the Southern Right whales at Logans Beach and in summer they come for a beach holiday. The image on the dish shows the Warrnambool Hopkins River near its mouth. The boatshed is no longer there with sections of the building being relocated to a site in Henna Street and used for indoor recreational purposes.This ash tray is retained as an example of a local tourist souvenir sold to tourists in the 1960s. This is a small white china dish made in an oval shape and slightly raised from the surface on which it sits. The ends of the dish have four gold coloured indents for stubbing cigarettes. There is a gold rim around the edge of the dish and a coloured image of the old boat shed and jetty on the Hopkins River in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society was housed since the early 1970s in the old caretaker’s cottage in Gilles Street (called today History House). While History House was being renovated the Historical Society, in association with the Warrnambool Family History Group, was housed in the Mechanics Institute building at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. In 2013 new buildings were placed at the rear of Mozart Hall next to History House and called Heritage Works. The two groups moved from Flagstaff Hill late in 2013 and the new facility was officially opened in March 2014 by the Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine. This item is a souvenir booklet that would have been purchased by a tourist in the Warrnambool district in the mid 20th century. The photographs are representative of the tourist attractions of the area – Hopkins Falls, the mouth of the Hopkins River, Shelly Beach, the Breakwater, the Botanical Gardens etc. Tourism in Warrnambool began to be important towards the end of the 19th century when the coastal scenery, the beaches and the Sea Water Baths were advertised to promote Warrnambool as a spa resort town. Today tourism is a major industry in the city. This item is of minor interest as a souvenir of the type of postcard purchased by tourists in the mid 20th century. This is a piece of blue paper folded in two with black and blue printing on the front and back covers and an image of two kookaburras on the front cover. In the back of the front cover is pasted a strip of paper containing 13 black and white photographs folded in concertina fashion to form a booklet. The front cover has an extension that fits into a slot on the back cover to enclose the photographs. There is space for a stamp and an address on the front cover and space for the name of the sender on the back cover.
