Although 23 photos were taken at the time, 14 were not scanned due to their similarity to the nine featured photos. Two sequoia Californian redwood trees were planted at the front entrance of Fortuna Villa in the early days of gold mining magnate George Lansell’s occupation in the 1870’s. They were of immense proportion and much admired during the Lansell era and RA Svy’s occupation from 1942 to 1996. In these early days of Army occupation, the trees were lopped due to concerns of their size and proximity to the Villa. The felling of the tree in 1994 was considered unsafe due to perceptions of disease. These perceptions were upsetting to staff, as some believed that although there were a few dead branches, the tree was OK. As the tree had a noticeable lean, measurements were taken indicating the tree was stable. A sequoia sapling was eventually planted as a replacement to the diseased tree. It was decided to mill and store the timber of the felled tree on-site due to its historical significance. Although future uses were not determined at the time, the timber was eventually used to construct display cabinets and souvenir pens. When Defence decided to relocate geospatial production to a new facility in Junortoun an outer suburb of Bendigo in 2008, the sequoia timber was used as a beautiful feature in the front foyer as well as several feature walls within the building, providing a historical connection Fortuna Villa. This is a set of nine photographs of contractors felling a Sequoia (Californian redwood) tree at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 16th of September 1994. The colour photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. Kneen 8 July 1992, "The reference to the planting of this tree in "Green Grows Our Garden" is not correct. Correspondence from Charles French held in the archives indicates that the Horticultural Society of Victoria met at Burnley in 1857 and Charles French then an apprentice in a nursery at Richmond was asked to plant the tree. The writer of G.G.O.G. did not see this correspondence and relied on my recollections which proved to be faulty."View of the Sequoia sempervirens and Jacaranda mimosafolia and the beds in front. Over 200 species of trees and shrubs were planted, including several large Himalayan Cedars (Cedrus deodora), a Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), rare Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), Pencil Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), Bunya Bunya Pines (Araucaria bidwillii), a Purple-leaved Dutch Elm (Ulmus x hollandica 'Purpurascens'), American Ash (Fraxinus americana), Pinus radiata, and numerous Populus alba trees and suckers. The gardens were considered integral to the healing process, also including orchards and kitchen gardens. In the 1880s, tourists flocked to Beechworth as the area became recognised as a health resort and picturesque beauty spot. Although the hospital closed in 1940, and parts were subsequently demolished, the gardens remain and form part of the site's listing on the Victorian Heritage Register. This photograph is part of a collection of items held by the Burke Museum relating to Ovens District Hospital. Photograph - Emerald Primary School, Unknown photographer, 1970s
... ...sequoia...The tree depicted in the image, a mature Sequoia, or Californian Redwood, was destroyed to build an additional brick wing during these works. ...Local farmers and business-owners who settled in Emerald after the initial gold rush period first petitioned for a school in the local area in 1876, with at least two petitions to the Education department lodged by 1877. Emerald School no. 2110 opened as a temporary 'half time' school (meaning that the single teacher split their time between two schools) in temporary facilities in January 1879 while a permanent location was selected. Lobbying by townspeople in 1899 identified the present location of Emerald School no. 3381, within the original township boundary near the football field. The original building constructed to house the school was described variously as 'the tin shed' and 'a hut with a chimney.' It opened in February 1901. The buildings depicted in the photograph show a selection of school buildings and portable classrooms just before major construction works began in late 1977. Five existing portable classrooms were halved in size and moved to a different location before work on a brick wing containing classrooms, an arts and craft room and staff facilities began in early 1978. A 1915 classroom, which may be the building on the left of the image, was modified into administrative offices at the same time. At the time of writing (2023) Emerald Primary School is the largest primary school in the area, with nearly 500 students. The item is significant as it presents a view of Emerald Primary School (Township School no. 3381) in the late 1970s before extensive building works changed the appearance of the school. The tree depicted in the image, a mature Sequoia, or Californian Redwood, was destroyed to build an additional brick wing during these works. Additionally, it is possible that the building on the left-hand side of the image is one of two 1915 classrooms present on the site.Black and white rectangular photograph of the emerald Primary School printed on print media paper. The image depicts the exterior of Emerald Primary School, looking into the school grounds from the street, as it appeared in the late 1970s. In the foreground of the photograph is a gravel path and waist-height chain-link fence. Inside the fence to the left of the image is a large tree and to the right is a sign saying 'Emerald Primary School.' In the background of the photograph are two pale-coloured weatherboard school buildings, one of which has two brick chimneys.Obverse: EMERALD / PRIMARY SCHOOL /1970s, emerald, victoria, australia, emerald primary school, township school no. 3381, township school no. 2110, education, school children, families, sequoia, californian redwood
