This work was undertaken in 2001 when the artist was undertaking an Honours year at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy (later Federation University). This item is a part of the Federation University School of Business Art Collection. "The woven form was made at 'Blue Waters' near Creswick. I remember that I went out hoping to make something and I had a few mediocre starts but nothing really inspired was popping for me. Eventually I sat on the bank and started tossing little pebbles into the water. Finally the immediacy and ephemerality of the dissipating ripples struck me. I made the work by twisting and weaving the reeds which lined the banks of 'Blue Waters'. I then floated the rings together and managed to get a couple of quick photos before the work floated away and dissipated." In 1960 and 1961, the International House Students Club organised a float for the Dandenong "Pageant for Progress", to garner support for the Building Fund to contribute to development of a new wing. The Women's Auxiliaries assisted in preparing the float, which also participated in Melbourne's Moomba festival. Pictured here is Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1957 to 1970, leading Malaysia through its transition to independent statehood. By May 1960, the International House basketball team had won both of its social games against the Newman College and University teams, with the Student Club having purchased uniforms and equipment the previous year. William (Bill) Holder, pictured here taking a drink after a football match, was an editor of the first volume of the International House magazine, Satadal, in 1959, and the 1960 IH student president. Originally from Kerang, Victoria, Holder studied law at The University of Melbourne. In 1960, IH students played social sport matches against other Colleges. In 1960, the University's Student Representative Council produced a thirty minute colour film called 'Don't Send Your Daughter', designed to showcase the activities of first year students ("freshers") for high school students and their parents. The film starred Susan Stone and Christopher Carr as "two typical freshers", and some scenes were shot at International House, with the film played for a University audience in September 1960. Whilst female residents were not permitted at International House until 1972, the House hosted several formal events with invited guests, such as Dinner Dances held in April and July of 1960. Pictured here, Andrew Deacon was an Arts student and the first co-editor of the student magazine, Satadal, in 1959, and initiated International House's 'Waste Paper Basket Club', at which tutors and guests presented papers on global affairs. He went on to tutor English at the House in 1960. Sam Dimmick was Warden at International House from 1960 to 1970. Peter Rodden Shiells, B. Com., T.P.T.C., M.A.C.E. Peter Shiells was born on 22 November 1936, at Geelong. He began teaching in the technical field at Watsonia in 1958. He was later Head of Department at Macleod Technical School and Corio Technical School. Peter Shiells was appointed head of the Humanities department at the Ballarat North Technical School in 1970-1973, and was Vice-Principal in charge of the Ballarat Technical School 1974-1976. He was the Ballarat School of Mines Deputy Principal from 26 Sept 1977 to 02 May 1982, and was appointed Principal on 03 May 1982. Peter Shiells was a member of the Ballarat Regional Association for Continuing Education, and the Ballarat-Horsham Regional Council of Technical Education of which he was secretary in 1974. In 1978 he was a member of Mt Clear Technical – High school Council Peter Shiells retired on 30 April 1993 after 19 years distinguished service at the Ballarat School of Mines. More than 150 staff attended his farewell afternoon tea. He died in 2002. Pictured here is Nicos 'Nick' Kanaris, a foundation student, and later tutor, of International House. Kanaris and his friend Michael Kirnis represented Cyprus among the first forty-two students at International House in 1957. Awarded the Exhibition in Botany III and attaining a Masters in Science, Kanaris became a residential tutor of Botany and Biology for the House from 1959 to 1960. Having returned to work in their home country, both men had decided to return to Australia after spending Christmas with their families. Tragically, however, both Kanaris and Kirnis were killed in a plane crash en route to Cyprus in 1961. Their lives and contributions to International House were commemorated via a memorial scholarship funded by the Student Club. The people labelled as pictured include Sammy Wu (1), Teong Eu, Nick Kanaris, Dr Suri, Roger Egglestone, and Tay Soo Lay (2) Warden Sam Dimmick (3), and John Morrish (6). The identities of the women are unknown, and they were likely guests invited to International House's regular dinner dances and events. In 1960, the Council suggested that women students of the University could be made non-resident members of the House, and began discussing plans for housing women, which did not eventuate until 1972.
