Sia and Irini were first cousins; their mothers, Ekaterini Athanitis and Giannoula Varvarigos (nee Lekatsas) were sisters. In 1991 Sia was the first woman to be elected as President of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. They arrived in Australia in 1923 when Loula was aged 2 and settled in Newcastle. Loula married Nicholas Moraitis (Morris) in Newcastle. The family then all moved to Melbourne where they ran a milk bar at 162 Toorak Road South Yarra. Loula and Nicholas had two children, Jim and Andrianna. ... Sikiotis ...The men are all members of the Skiotis family. Standing from L-R: Nick Skiotis and Panos Skiotis, sons of Nick Skiotis senior who is seated in the front on the right. Gerasimos Skiotis is seated on his left. The gentlemen in the photograph all arrived in Melbourne at different times before 1920. Panos Skiotis migrated to Australia in 1913, and then in 1917 went to China where he established himself as a tobacco merchant. Two of his sons, Hector and Denis, were born in China and the third son, Nick, was born in Ithaca when the family returned to Greece in 1936. The five women photographed with were travelling to Greece by ship and are picture with the captain. On the left are Athena Sikiotis, her mother Chrisoula Sikiotis (nee Kallinikos) and cousin Penelope Kallinikos (Billiter). The 1960s saw more and more first and second generation Ithacans travelling to Greece to visit the island to reunite or meet family. Up until the 1970s travel to and from Europe was mainly by ship and took around one month. During the 1970s air travel gradually became the norm. One of the men pictured outside the South Yarra Fruit Palace is Nick Sikiotis. Located at 600 Chapel Street in South Yarra, Sikiotis established the business in 1922. He also established a shop at 345 Toorak Road, on the corner of Rockley Road which was leased to a florist. His business was one of many owned and operated by Ithacans in both the Melbourne CBD and surrounding suburbs during the first decade of the twentieth century. The family group photographed in July 1983.at Tullamarine Airport where they were gathered to farewel Nick and Elsie Varigos who were travelling to Greece. The members of the group are from L-R: Euana Evans nee Varigos, Robert Evans, Elsie Varigos, Nick Varigos, Leah Kandiliotis nee Sikiotis, John Sikiotis, and Gerry Rigos. Elsie and Nick made several trips to Ithaca in the late 70s and early 80s, staying for extended periods. Nick was born in 1909 in Rhodesia where his parents had initially migrated prior to coming to Australia. Elsie was born in Melbourne in 1925. She travelled to Greece with her parents and siblings in 1939 just prior to the outbreak of war and as a result spent almost seven years on Ithaca and experienced the occupation by the Italians and the Germans, and the hardship endured by the locals..
