Historical information

The five women photographed with were travelling to Greece by ship and are picture with the captain. On the left are Athena Sikiotis, her mother Chrisoula Sikiotis (nee Kallinikos) and cousin Penelope Kallinikos (Billiter).

Significance

The 1960s saw more and more first and second generation Ithacans travelling to Greece to visit the island to reunite or meet family. Up until the 1970s travel to and from Europe was mainly by ship and took around one month. During the 1970s air travel gradually became the norm.
