Phillip Island Conservation Society Inc.Work on paper - Photocopy of newspaper cutting, "A Note to Simon", Tuesday February 10, 1966
... Presumably the photograph had been in a previous edition so this item in the form of a letter to Simon would be a follow up to the original article. ...Presumably the photograph had been in a previous edition so this item in the form of a letter to Simon would be a follow up to the original article. ...Written in February 1966, this is a letter from the editor or a journalist to a child who had brought a weak young Little Penguin into the office of the Express newspaper in Wonthaggi. February is the time that adult penguins have what is known as a “catastrophic moult" when they lose all of their feathers within a week or 2 and cannot go to the sea to fish. Any chicks left in the burrow will not be fed and need to go to sea themselves to feed. Some are just not strong enough or have mature feathers to do this and perish. Bert West was a Phillip Island resident and manager at the Penguin Parade, who was very knowledgeable about Little Penguins and was able to explain this to the journalist who then wrote the letter. Presumably the photograph had been in a previous edition so this item in the form of a letter to Simon would be a follow up to the original article. This cutting is significant because it indicates that this Little Penguin had been fishing in the Cape Paterson area, and possibly was not able to find sufficient food there. It also indicates that there was apparently no process in place for dealing with weak birds found by the public. Neither the child nor the photographer knew any better than to allow the child to interfere with or hold a sick Penguin as shown in the photo. That is definitely no longer recommended, as we now know that handling a sick bird in that way is very stressful to them and can contribute to poor outcomes for them. Very poor photocopy of single column with large photo of boy holding penguin under textTHE EXPRESSphillip island, penguin parade, cape paterson, bert west, wildlife care, little penguin -

He began skiing at an early age and spent many winters at Falls Creek. After leaving school in 1973, Alex decided to live at Falls Creek and went on to join the Falls Creek Ski Patrol. He was quickly promoted to second in charge of the Patrol aged 20 and was one of the first fulltime paid patrollers on the mountain. Alex also played in the band at the Frying Pan in the Bowl. Tragically he died in a car accident on the Oxley Road leaving the mountain on 23rd of August 1976. His funeral was a St John’s church in Toorak, and ashes were scattered on The Summit in a ski formation of the letter A by his young brother Simon and members of the Patrol. After Alex’s death, a small hut was constructed at the top of the Summit in 1980 which houses first-aid equipment used by Ski Patrol where a plaque was placed by Ski Patrol. Each year since Alex’s death, at 5pm on the 23rd of August, Falls Creek Ski Patrol gathers at this hut along with members of the Falls Creek community to remember Alex and other patrollers no longer here. This annual event is referred to as the Warrender Night, and celebrates the spirit of the Ski Patrol. Members of the Ski Patrol also raised funds and materials to build The Alexander Warrender Memorial Ski Patrol Base located on the ridge to the left at the top of Eagle Chair. It was officially opened by Alex’s mother Pamela on August 23rd 1990.This image is significant because they capture the image of one of Falls Creek's First Official Ski Patrollers whose memory is still honoured today.A colour photo of Alex Warrender Ski Patroller at Falls Creek and a framed photo of a group of Ski Patrollers and friends who attended Warrender Night in 2008Beneath framed image: Ski Patrol Evening 23 August 2008 - Summit Hut - Falls Creek Thank you from The Warrnedersalex warrender, falls creek ski patrol -

The aim of The Bendigo Easter Festival is to increase awareness of, and attendance at the Bendigo Easter Festival amongst regional, intrastate, and interstate audiences by 2006. Bendigo Easter Festival - Australia's oldest festival ... .... .. Gold, gold, gold. The year of 1871 was a great year for Bendigo. Parks were laid out, trees lined the streets. Although acknowledged as starting in 1869 the Easter Festival was considered an annual event by 1871. Under brilliant illumination the whole of the Camp Reserve (now Rosalind Park) was filled with a bewildering variety of groups, exhibits and individuals all eager to be involved in such a worthwhile cause. There were sports meetings, theatricals, bazaars and instrumental items as well as dancing and carnival rides. On Easter Monday, as it is today, there was a grand procession that included a variety of bands. 1871 also marked the first year that the Chinese joined in the festivities. Originally the Chinese participated in the procession by dressing in richly embroidered costumes, and carrying colourful banners in all shapes and sizes, which were specially made for them in China. In 1889, the Chinese were given their traditional place in the Parade, the end. They created a wonderful spectacle with their colourful costumes, banners and flags, and in 1892, Loong, the dragon appeared. The Bendigo Easter Festival had been fortunate in that it bad such a lively Chinese community in its midst. At the time of course, Bendigo was known as Sandhurst, and it was not until twenty years after the first Easter Festival that the town was known as Bendigo. These days with sponsorship from the Sandburst Trustees, the Festival is known as the Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. 132 years later, the Sandburst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival has had many changes. But loyal followers have never been disappointed. This year people saw the traditions upheld with family entertainments and not Loong, but Sun Loong, meaning new dragon, a 100m long Imperial Dragon who was created to take the place of the aging Loong. The group encourages patience, open-mindedness, and a belief that ambitious outcomes are achievable. Fortuna is recognized as significant on a national level. Bendigo city councillors have visited the site and found it to be in surprisingly good condition. The Commonwealth Government, through the Defence Department, is committed to preserving the site's heritage and will undertake comprehensive works before transferring ownership. The document advocates for staged development and initial seed funding, noting these are proven methods for achieving significant community projects.Economic viability is considered possible, referencing the successful example of Abbotsford Convent. The group cautions against dismissing community ideas as unrealistic or too costly without proper consideration. The importance of being patient and receptive to diverse ideas is highlighted as essential for the site's future. 11217.16b Letter to the Editor from Brenda Stevens-Chambers, Kyneton Suggests the federal government should transfer ownership of Fortuna to the people of Bendigo as a cultural gesture. Notes that the building is reportedly run down, implying the government should take responsibility for its restoration before gifting. Opposition to Medical UseExpresses a preference against converting Fortuna into a medical establishment. Emphasizes the desire to see Fortuna and its grounds opened to the public as a cultural and recreational space, reflecting personal and community aspirations. 11217.16c Letter to the Editor from Beverley Carter, Bendigo Fortuna Villa is recognized as a significant property in Bendigo. The restoration and ongoing maintenance of Fortuna Villa will require a substantial financial investment.Potential. There is an implication that, with proper restoration, Fortuna Villa could become highly valuable or a "goldmine" once again. Restoring and maintaining historic properties like Fortuna Villa is costly but enriches community life by preserving connections to the past. The City of Greater Bendigo has the opportunity to add Fortuna Villa to its portfolio of iconic buildings. There is strong community support for keeping Fortuna Villa in public ownership. Any future use must be financially viable to ensure long-term sustainability. Two main proposals have emerged: A health facility, supported by Cr Kevin Gibbins. A community arts complex, proposed by the Villa Fortuna Action Group. Some stakeholders, such as Mr. Carter, believe the arts centre idea is unrealistic.Evaluation of ProposalsWhile a health facility would benefit Bendigo, it could be purpose-built elsewhere and may not leverage Fortuna Villa's unique appeal. 11217.16d Letter to the Editor from Simon Mulqueen, Quarry Hill The author strongly advocates for Fortuna's preservation, highlighting its significance to the city and reinforcing the need for ongoing protection efforts. The use of Fortuna Villa must not burden the community or compromise its heritage value. Any development should be sustainable, practical, and non-destructive to the Villa's historic character. Suggests selling the current municipal offices and using the proceeds to build a new facility adjacent to Fortuna Villa. This would allow for the creation of an integrated civic precinct, including new council offices, adequate parking, and maintained gardens. Emphasizes the need for vision, commitment, and cooperation among council, community members, and state and federal governments.Advocates for broad community involvement to ensure the success of the project.Role of Fortuna Villa. Envisions the Villa being managed as a community facility, hosting council and community functions, exhibitions, and attracting visitors. Stresses that Fortuna Villa should be developed and managed as a national heritage icon for the benefit of the city.Fortuna should be multi-use Article - The Bendigo Weekly Friday Aug 01 2008 This item contains the following: 11217.16a Letter to the Editor from Terry Davidson, Villa Fortuna Action Group 11217.16b Letter to the Editor from Brenda Stevens-Chambers, Kyneton 11217.16c Letter to the Editor from Beverley Carter, Bendigo 11217.16d Letter to the Editor from Simon Mulqueen, Quarry Hillnon-fictionbendigo, fortuna, george lansell
